Punishment can NEVER be taking the guilty guy to previous possition of commiting the crime; if you do that, a lot more ppl will do ilegal things, because if they get caught, they just lose nothing.
Penalty has many goals, here are some of them:
It has to be deterrent, so you will think it twice before doing something.
It must take guilty ppl out of society ( wow in this case) for a period of time, or maybe forever, so they wont do same thing again.
It must give example to others.
Its a way of "paying back" to ppl you offended.
Its a way culprit gets re-educated to rejoin society when penalty is over.
So ban for using exploits after being part of the PTR group ( so you knew them and get advantage of it, and also you betrayed GMs trust) seems pretty fair to me; They will have time to think about what they did while they level up their new characters
