Legacy Realms....
I honestly feel this is in Blizzards best interest at this point. With them not reporting subscriber numbers and the last report dropping down to 5.5 million. They are most likely under what they originally started the game with over 10 years ago.
What does this say to you?
They are obviously planning to move on from WoW as their main feature of games with the current state of things. Or their planning went terribly wrong. Maybe if they release a new MMO(wtb hydra back) or announce something like legacy games soon they can recoup players before they forget. Overwatch is cool but its not something true MMO fans of blizzard want. Sure most people will buy it, but will it even compare to the revenue the World of Warcraft game gave the company for some many years? We will find out I'm sure.
They could bring back at least a million subs if they release Legacy Realms for each expansion. With an officiall announcement people would come back from all over just to play their favorite content again and again. They want what you had not what you have. Forcing a player base into something new won't work. Laying out more options for your fans to keep paying you. That's a good idea I think.
However if they are just bringing in higher numbers from less players. I'm sure they don't see anything different from a business standpoint. they do basically sell instant 100 and assortment of random items now. Why not just sell Legacy Realms too? next to 0 development time if they use (or at least support) fan-made projects (its just open source code). Would they even consider a project that supports them up front?
Just have a disclaimer about limited customer service on outdated games specifically in-game help for older versions of warcraft.
I mean honestly there's tons of players on privates or following these things right now. They would all go back to blizzard in a heart beat for something like this.
Could also require an current active expansion to the main game to have access to the old games.
It just another form of entertainment people are willing to pay for.
