First of all, I am deeply saddened by this turn of events. Whilst it was always a risk, I can't help but feel saddened that it came to pass.
I would like to offer my entire families heartfelt thanks to the crew behind Nostalrius. We all have different reasons for playing here but the one uniting reason is our desire to play vanilla. You people made that possible. From server code to forum support, you are all truly special and deserve applause.
I recently resubscribed to retail --because of Nostalrius-- not in spite of. I wanted to compare the differences in play styles, raids, etc. If Nostalrius is being taken offline and The Snow Blowers are not offering their own vanilla servers then my recent decision to resubscribe will not be for the long term.
Vanilla and WoD are so vastly different it is absurd to claim it costs then subscribers, or harms their IP. It is like Pepsi and Coca Cola. Sure, they are both cola drinks, but they are so different they cannot infringe on each other. With Legion changing the animations entirely the difference gap is only increasing further.
I do believe they are well within their rights to shut down servers that try to offer post Cataclysm content, because of its similarity to retail. However attacking the vanilla community in this way is a crime against culture. The historical archiving and availability of video games should be allowed and preserved. Books and movies do this. Ancient scrolls do this. Yet humanities latest attempt at storytelling is being brutally abused by lawyers and share holders. Ultimately this will be detrimental to the industry, their profits, and humanities historical records.
To everyone, may you walk the path of light in these dark times.
