Qualifications: I am not a fanboy. I am a huge fan of Classic and BC WoW (And was a huge raider), but I am only casual on Nost and have only taken part in few conversations. Lastly; I am old, mature, and have experience in all of the key factors related to this subject. By that I mean I am a Software Architect and Businessman.

I have little faith that we will get a Vanilla server in any form. The most they will do is add open up a currently-progressed server that has Heirlooms and Dungeon Finder disabled (and similar things). But they don't realize that inclusion of those carebear features isn't why we dislike current progression.

We like Classic WoW (And some of us like BC Equally) not only because you had to legitimately earn your way through progression, but also because:

    Earning progression was difficult
Strategy is required, and raid builds are complex
Raids could be up to 40 man
There were no gaps in story, because it was the beginning
Building a character was complicated and original, even when people settled on some standard builds
Levelling was just as fun as Endgame. It wasn't skipped for dungeon finder or quick easy quests and easy quest rewards
The complexity drew in certain kinds of people: Mature people, Dedicated people, and Trolls, who all shared a love of the complexity

So when you ask if we will get a Vanilla server. If you not only mean a Non-Progressed (or Classic-Only Progression) server, then it is unlikely. But if you mean a server that meets the above requirements, the answer is no. Any server created by Blizzard as a result of this will be a watered down server with simplified complexity, different character building styles, and many other features that make the game easier.

And when if it happens, and it fails, Blizzard will just pretend they proved that Vanilla servers fail, and will use that for ammunition.

We shouldn't settle for anything less than Nostalrius servers served by Blizzard and maintained by true Classic players. If Blizzard wants to do some watered down bullshit, they should just step down and Nost should release their source code.

Eventually some developers at my level (Or, probably equally, the level of the amazing Nost crew) will find a way to have a shared character database and login server, and we will be able to replicate the game across hundreds of servers where we can share toons and Blizzard will never be able to stop us. Worst-case, we'd sometimes have to play on slow foreign (Not French) servers while faster servers are spun up and await blizzard to waste money on trying to shut it down.

That is my 2 cents

+1

If this happens I would play there all day.

I would love this too. I really hope blizzard saved everything because with their data and Nostalrius experience at promoting and running a vanilla server they could brainstorm to put together a really accurate version of classic wow. Imagine the talent trees etc changing like they did in retail. It would be amazing and fun if it later followed on to TBC etc.

Unfortunately this will be bad for those other private servers who are for profit. It seems like they have already invaded our forums posting on accounts with no history etc demanding code be released. These shitters are really starting to annoy me.

The only decent thing to do if they were to release their source, would be to release it to us that maintain the original mangos projects, so we could implement their improvements for the benefit of everyone :) Unfortunately some go as far as to say they would take legal action to obtain the entirety of the code (the anti cheat), however they do not share the views of or represent the majority of developers working on mangos. Any fixes are good fixes, and I'm sure most of us would be happy with even a stripped down version of the source and world database :)

I agree with this assessment of the situation. I lost my enthusiasm for retail when everything got easier and there was no more sense of achievement. Gone were the days when I was just happy getting a nice green item and leveling was challenging. Blizzard stained their MMORPG credibility when they watered down the quests and leveling just so everyone could get to cap and enjoy end game content: i.e. raids.

My take in the situation is that Blizzard is trying to save face with the WoW community by extending an olive branch to the Nost devs. It will make them appear as do they are "listening" and give them positive points in PR with vanilla players.

In the end though I don't think legacy servers will happen. They already said:
"We explored options for developing classic servers and none could be executed without great difficulty. If we could push a button and all of this would be created, we would. However, there are tremendous operational challenges to integrating classic servers, not to mention the ongoing support of multiple live versions for every aspect of WoW. "

We know this is bullshit. 30 people ran a great vanilla server that they shut down and they CAN'T do it?
Their stance has been NO to legacy servers all along. This topic has been brought up time and time again and it has always been NO. So I don't think they'll change their minds just because they will meet up with Mark Kern and the Nost devs.

Then again I hope to be wrong. I hope that this brings back vanilla wow, TBC, WOTLK and we get to return to Azeroth to play the game the way it was always meant to be played.

They use the legal action blabla as an excuse don't get fooled.
There is no one taking any actions to get the whole code access.

Unfortunately it has been mentioned and used as an excuse from both sides, some related to mangos and some related to nostalrius. Does that mean I believe it will happen? No, but I believe it's important to point out that pretty much everyone working on mangos actively feel there's absolutely no need to force anyone to release their source, even though it would be appreciated :)

i will be honest, I was really hoping the database would be release.. I have no real interest in the legacy servers on WoW because I think they will be a colossal waste of time. WoW, as it is today, is not designed for game play of that nature as it is too busy being Facebook Gaming 2.0.

WoW started going down hill at the end of WotLK, with making players all OP, causing them to charge through the IC 5 mans with out care or thought, and continued on making players more and more OP in Cata and beyond. And now, players are just used to being given everything, not having to earn rewards, and are given a legendary just for showing up. To start making live servers have this Legacy vibe to it will probably seal the deal for WoW.

An idea I would like to see is to have Blizzard license out to Nost and let us have our server back.. maybe with a small fee so we can keep what we want and Blizzard can get what they want, money.

I think your post is appalling.

It is profoundly misplaced and gratuitously abusive at the same time. The Nost team created all of this in their own time. They owe us nothing.

Not only is what you are saying utterly wrong, but the way you are saying it is utterly repellent.
