That being said though, I approach this announcement not with excitement but with a little bit of caution, blizzard at the time made all of those changes not in a vacuum, but in the context of how the state of the game (talents, overall completion of content) and its players (average skill) was at that time, a context that you guys sorely lack and as much as we like to mythologize how great vanilla was, in many cases Blizzard at the time was largely inexperienced on how to balance an MMO.

Also this seems as well a case of players wanting their cake and eat it too, yes having as close of an authentic blizzlike experience is very important but it's never going to be the same, even if this change does happen most players will still rush through the content, we know what items and talents to get, also we know a lot more about the classes we play in general.

To put into perspective this is a video of the world first Ragnaros kill (rogue's perspective): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Br1hXGXJ7Tg

No Slice and Dice or Adrenaline Rush and also whispering throughout the whole fight and this is from the rogue who's 3rd in damage done, a player with half a brain could out-damage that rogue easily right now.

Sounds like somebody read the thread which this change is based on :)

Here's something I was thinking about:

Nostalrius is going to add more stuff over time to recreate the Blizzard's experience back in the days. Personally I find this great and I'm really looking forward to it.

But it also makes me wonder. What made those updates great was that we didn't knew what was coming. You can see it somehow as where everyone stopped raiding before we knew that BC came out and there was no purpose to gathering your T2 or T3 gear anymore.

How do you guys think it would influence our experience if we look at the timeline. We'll know exactly what'll come and when it comes.

Will it influence the gaming experience, hell yeah..
you allready know what will happen it is no longer a mysterie for us.
so the same experience will be impossible even in blizzard was to launch vanilla.
the only thing is that if you keep the timeline in mind at all times you're going to have a horrible gaming experience.

same thing for watching a movie for a second or third time, it's still fun if it's a good movie.
You know what will happen, and you will be more focussed on the details and enjoying a different view of things.

As kovenant already pointed out, its kinda inevitable. The alternative is custom scripting, which either is another year of scripting by extremely dedicated & skilled devs (assuming you manage to dodge the "all of nothing" rampage), or you have a very half hearted server with sketchy scripts which no one wants to play on. Point being, this is more or less as good as a custom 1.12 server gets, anyone claiming otherwise either hasn't experienced pre 1.4 or has a logic full of holes.

True. I'm positively curious how it will go :-) I've played many classic WoW on private servers. But that was every time in the 1.12 patch without anything new being introduced.

I think this server will definitely bring something new towards the experience of a private vanilla server. And as Kovenant said, we might better not look too much to the timeline :-)

Personally I don't agree with those that are against this timeline. If I understand everything correct, it is only the content and item availability that will be different from other servers. Talents, abilities and the like will be as if it was 1.12, or am I wrong?

With regards to the content, many other "blizzlike" private servers have had "gating" either way as raids and instances has not been finished and released when the servers opened, or they have been bugged.

As for the items, I find that to be amazing. It simply adds another difficulty level to MC and Onyxia. The original release gear was much worse than the buffed counterparts, actually making the first content more challenging. Some may find that annoying, but unless MC is significantly buffed on Nostalrius compared to retail, it should still be more than easy enough.

As for the release schedule, it seems fairly reasonable to me, maybe the gap between AQ clear and Naxx release could be slightly shorter?

Example: AQ clear ->1month wait ->Scourge Invasion->2 months wait->Naxx. Unless my memory fails me, Scourge Invasion did not add any sort of raid content, so we would still be able to farm/progress AQ while it was going on. A 4 month wait for content after AQ clear is double compared to the rest of the release schedule (though still nothing compared to many other servers).

I love the Timeline idea, but mostly because of the following item:

Savory Deviate Delight

Note: these are the effects of the COOKED version of the fish, contrary to popular belief these effects never occured on the uncooked variant of the fish. I have spent many hours selling the cooked fish on my lvl 35 Warlock to people who were hoping to get a costume, just to see them end up dead or as an ooze over 10 times before it worked

Can you devs tell us where you got the information on all the items at patch 1.4? The only source I know is allakhazam.com but there you can't look at all items at all times. For example
http://web.archive.org/web/200711161202 ... ource=live
has only one entry which is at 2007. You can see some changes in its stats at "item history" but you can't see the whole item stats for on patch.

You're using the database in the wrong way.
Here's how to do it properly, and thoroughly (mind you this may take quite some time to find the right version of the item as some were not in the database until they dropped for the first time):

First, look up items by slot:
http://web.archive.org/web/200501150429 ... index.html
(This is as early as that list goes: January 15th, 2005 - and that's fine because that's far enough back)

Then click chest, you will get this link:
http://web.archive.org/web/200501150407 ... name5.html
Ctrl + F for gladiator - Bamm, you got it.

You can also search by item sets:
http://web.archive.org/web/200502062211 ... ml?setid=1
There the whole set is for you. ;)

It helps to know that Savage Gladiator set was one the very first sets put into the database! :)
