I'm not one to be disillusioned by Classic. I still play Live quite regularly, but use Private servers during these ultra-long tiers to keep myself interested in WOW. I played Nostalrius when it was first announced over a year ago, and took quite a long break after I remembered how little there actually was to do in Classic, but these past 4-5 months I have returned to it looking for something to occupy my time. In that time I leveled three characters to 60, and spent countless hours enjoying myself and meeting others.
I must say, I was never expecting it to end like THIS, but I think this is a great example of why Private servers should never be trusted.
Here's my experience with Classic servers thus far:
During Dragon Soul I was looking for more to do, so I found Feenix 1.12. I quickly leveled up and began enjoying the game when I met some people why would eventually become a set of close friends. We raided through AQ on feenix before the guild broke up. I wanted to stick with them even though we couldn't raid there any more, but to my surprise, they were quitting Feenix and their toons they have months of /played on to go to Scriptcraft?
So I go there, and begin leveling on Horde this time. Get to 60, and guess what? Feenix announces a TBC server. So they quit classic all together and start playing on the TBC server. I much prefer TBC for a lot of reasons - the game is just more developed, specs are viable, gear is legit, and there are reasons to do dungeons. So it seems like a win-win!
JK, after a few months of Karas and some light raiding, Emerald Dream gets announced! A 1x Classic.
1x? Every server we have played on thus far was high rate leveling, so by the time I even get to 40 on this server, these guys are just gone for good. I kept playing there, until......
NOSTALRIUS? What's that, never heard of it? Oh goody its 1x as well, and everyone is abandoning all other projects so I'm forced to come play there instead. So after spending weeks leveling toons on ED, now I have to spend even more time here trying to figure out a way to level when there are 5 thousand people in the barrens.
And then after all that time and effort, the server gets shut down by Blizzard.
I'm not saying I'll never play on a private server again, but I've been playing the same Paladin for 12 years now on Blizzard's live version. WoD has been a mess, and TBC and Classic are always enjoyable, but until Blizzard officially supports the option (if ever) I don't think I can ever take it serious. When I have to start again every year because Hype train or the servers shut down, its just not WoW to me. I'm some one who likes to play for long periods of time, and this whole concept has been a nightmare with that in mind.
Oh well, here's to the best of them. Nostalrius Ends.
