The news many feared.
Just the code itself doesn't make a community, doesn't run a successful server.
Yup.
The writing was on the wall once the C&D was issued. Nostalrius was going to be worn down to irrelevance. It's popularity was created by a confluence of events.
1. Blizz's wow was awful.
2. Nothing new on the horizon.
3. Both Nostalrius and a competing server were actively hyping forthcoming Vanilla servers at the same time. If nostalrius had been released one week later, it never would have had the momentum that it enjoyed from the very beginning.
This coalescing of events cannot be recreated. If however, Nostalrius had a way to recreate it's server elsewhere, it might enjoy a sizable fracton of what it once had. Even that....could never be the same. It was a unique point in time best relegated to happy memory.
I'm in the wistful position of believing that...WoW should just cease to be. It's time for a do-over. There's no way to regain what it once was and attempting to relive it leaves me feeling empty.
I loved you Notalrius.
