I understand where you're coming from. I've been active on Project 1999 for a few years now. For those who don't know, this is a private, "classic" EverQuest server. If you're into slamming your dick in a door for shits and giggles, it's not bad - although, xp loss on death isn't as fun as I remembered it being in the late 90's.
That being said, modern MMO's just can't compete with the classics like vanilla WoW and old-school EQ. I remember when Rift first came out. I made max level in under a month of moderate game play in the evenings. That would have been unheard of in any MMO 10 years ago!
As an aside, the one great thing about Rift was the traditional class role mix-up. All the gankers and griefers made rouges - as per the norm - but they sucked in PvP! Rouges were the best end-game tanks; warriors had the best melee DPS; mages could heal almost as good as priests; etc. It was an odd, fun game...
