Nobody but us knew about Stormrage.

So my gut feeling is that they fed Trolls to come and steal players as half of the people on their forums got there after reading about Storm rage in Nostalrius forums.

Sorry that it didn't turn out well, but you can just hope to take the "expected" population from one server to the other. It's like tring to have people drink pepsi instead of coke.

I was member of stormrage before they even announced x1 pve realm.

I suggested them to do that before Nost and Kronos appeared and Rebirth was down - they picked to do highrates with some custom features.

They called me nuts, fool, <you name it> but I said them that "they are offering 10 years old game on a way it's been offered countless times before and they won't get past 200 people online ever" I ofc left server and said I'll come back later to check on it.

I came back and omg woah... they are releasing x1 realm I was happy cuz of "i told you" moment and I actually wanted to play there.
But... Nost and Kronos are already here. Population for vanilla realms already picked their homes and laid their roots.
I told them to carefully pick the launch day and wait for something bad to happen to their competiton. Some downtime, ddos, whatever.... those are moment when you grab some portion of population.
They obviously again followed their own ideals and it turned out to be bad decision.

I'm glad we have 2 very good vanilla realms to compete vs each other. Competition is good stuff. Nost & Kronos are all you will ever need in terms of vanilla content.
