I actually agree with you. The change to the talent tree was needed as the trees were just becoming more and more bloated each expansion. However, I do think it is a problem that when you level up you don't get the satisfying "talent point." Sure a lot of these talents were (what you would call boring), but I always felt excited to get these things. I don't have a problem with +crit talents, but what I do have a problem with are talent trees that go 51 points deep, it starts to not make as much sense at that point, as a lot 31 talent points are really strong, and being able to obtain both, well it would take a lot of juggling.
I agree the talent system had to be revamped, but I don't really like the way they did it. However, current retail wow isn't aiming to people like me. I realize that, and that is why I no longer play it.
and there was always a cookie cutter "best" spec that you had to use or you were gimping yourself.
I wouldn't really call it cookie-cutter specs, but rather that some talents were just useless. That was a problem of blizzard thinking things like "wand specilization" would be a good idea for mages. It was their shortsightedness that they didnt want to bother trying to correct, more than there needing to be a necessary change.
With the new talent system however, they just take all of those filler talents and make them passives, leaving only the important choices. And for most classes, the choices are actually kinda equal to each other. It has you switching talents between fights to maximize your effectiveness, which is also pretty interesting.
Sure, but it doesn't have the same feel of D&D that the mmo genre is based off of. Thats my main criticism of where the MMO genre is heading. It has really abandoned its roots.
Yeah, I have a nostalgia boner for the old talents, but the new talents are not literally hitler like everyone makes them out to be.
I agree. The change gets more hate than it deserves, but make no mistake it does deserve criticism. The main problem with retail is that they have chosen to go with a model that has alienated the original MMO fanbase. There literally isn't a good MMO to play right now. At least an MMO for people who actually like the so called "negative" aspects of the genre.
