Nostalrius Begins - Quality wow vanilla realm (1.12)

So, the 'famous' Dodgykebaab released his server review for Kronos

Is this a fair, unbiased review? In my opinion not:

- Mentions only 2 bugs, yet he posted a rage-post on the Kronos forums about a game breaking bug/problem he did not mention even once in his review:

Get this combat bug fixed above all else. When casting and you get the message that you are busy with another action, it's a fucking arse hole. I'm writing my script very soon and this is a big draw.

- Gets a lvl 60 character with an epic mount to skip the whole leveling *cough cough*
Well, of course you won't encounter bugs while leveling now. Many escort quests are STILL bugged (NPC runs away, quest fails etc), some mobs have still wrong abilities or are bugged (Mob has mind controll ability? Mob will reset - kek. Thunderstorm by a lvl ~45 mob for several hundred damage ticks? Yep.)

Sure, you can test end game content which is more important, BUT meh, I can't help myself to not get a fishy feeling about the staff providing stuff to a tester and making his life easier.

- Mentions the population would be 'good enough to do x' but does neither include a census or at least a /who screenshot...we all know why:
3k pop release, 2.5k pop the following days
1.3k last weekend pop, 800-1000 spike on EU primetime weekdays...you can see where this is going for a fresh server


- I am sad that he showed a low level BG as there are 0(absolutely none) BGs opening now for lower lvl and the 60 BGs open only into the primetime where mostly the same 1-3 groups are participating in warsong.
New players who want to do BG PvP will be extremely disappointed by this!

- Mentions the donation system (which is fair) but not the character auctions where you can sell your character(for Kronos currency) or exchange characters with other players (Ninja looters ahoy! Raid quitters with negative DKP yeah! And of course you can also buy a character rename )

- Does not mention a pretty big server rule-set which does not allow you safespotting in neutral cities at all
There were so many bans because most people are simply not aware of this as this is just a thing you did in vanilla and on other p.servers without getting in trouble.


Those were simply important points he totally did not cover, either because he did not want to or because well, it could give Kronos a bit too negative review, hm?

well kronos is a relativly bad (because of that NOS vs Kronos battle) example for Dodgy's biased reviews. i know a better one.

i didn't say Dody did lie or anything, but he left MANY things out.

Dody usually states he hates p2w stuff or free gear overall.

coriously he did NOT mention that,
- Excalibur has 2 tiimes REP rates.
- u get a FREE ITEM OF YOUR CHOICE when u ding level 70
- overall gear up to sunwell for donations.
- higher BoJ rates

Well I didn't know dodgykebab before and was surprised about how 'popular' he is in the private server scene.

But those examples show me how bad some reviewers can be, biased, corrupt(doubt this) or just sleazy sloppy....and people still take them so seriously and take their word and judgement for granted.

Okay, so I'll address this head on.

1) The combat bug thread was shown to me as a problem from retail. I did make that post and complain about it but, it looks like I was wrong, and if you read that thread you linked in full - you'll see this.

2) I've said many times that I make my own style of reviews, and I don't make lists of what works and what does not - because this is not enjoyable for anyone to watch. I can't cover every single part of the game and every single mechanic. WoW is a huge game, there a untold quests and I can't look at everything. My reviews are made to convey the feel of a server.
When I did the Nostalrius review, I actually ran into more problems than I run into on a lot of servers, but apart from the D/C's I didn't make a big deal about it because despite the problems it's not how the server felt overall.

Sure Kronos has more problems than I show in the video (even if I didn't see them), but to dwell on about the problems would ruin the feeling I got that I'm trying to show.

3) /who command doesn't work like it does on Nostalrius and only shows 50 people. I don't normally give out actual population number in reviews because chances are my numbers will be wrong within a month of my review going up. I brought it up in the Nost review because clearly a major draw of Nost is the huge population which i was pretty sure would be stable.

4) Are you really moaning that I didn't cover PvP?! You do know me right?!

5) I always get questions saying "Why didn't you cover xyz". Something that you think is important, might not be for others. A rule about gank-camping being against the rules really isn't something I care too much about either way.

But to me, a review of something should cover as much as possible to give the impression to an interested player he might as well get, not just selected fragments of things which in total, could end up in a wrong mixture and either present the product in a wrong, too subjective light.
Cherry picking the nice, ignoring and not mentioning the bad things(or vice versa) and yep, objectivity not given, the interested players might join with the wrong expectation or not join at all because you simply left out things they were interested in.

Wrong.
It does even work better than the nost /who command with filtering and even using the census addon.

'/who 1-60' shows the whole faction in number, yes, it displays only 50 people at once, but to the left is the total number. Same with '/who warsong' or just a '/who' where you delete everything out of the entry field for further filters.

Nothing new, was like this on every server but nost for me. You should know this as a server reviewer....
Population is the number 1 detail of a private server for most people, sadly.

First of all, I totally do not know you, this is why I created this thread because I was surprised about the lack of objectivity you delivered with your review (no offense of course).

It was ~2 weeks after release of Kronos that there were nearly no low level BGs going on, you would have seen it if you would have tried it again...but well, if you are not interested in covering it, why even bring a part into it? If you wouldn't have the BG part in I wouldn't even say a thing about it but you did, so don't blame me

Yeah, fair enough, was just an example about things which are different on Kronos.
Besides the 10g respec cost cap and so on.
Those are facts, those are features, some are good, some are not good and some are neutral for most players but if you do not cover such simple features from a server which could be a BIG DEAL for players, I really wonder why people watch your reviews at all if you left out so much stuff....must be the entertainment then


I don't like your style of reviews and I am seriously sad that people make such a big deal out of some random thoughts about a server, snipped together into an entertainment video, when a server review can have a big impact for a server.

I used to like most of dodgykebaab videos. I even played on some servers covered by him. But honestly, the Kronos review is clearly not objective at all. Also, is clear the emphasis to the negative points on Nos review and to the positive points on Kronos review. Huge problems as population and the time waiting for BGs weren't even scratched. As a reviewer, is his job to show how good/bad is the server, from the most objective perspective possible (otherwise, we should register, download, install, create a char, explore etc and discover all by ourselves). A vid that doesn't follow this rule can't be entitled as a review. This was a bad move, that actually can be a harm to Kronos, once a potential new player will easly notice how selective is the "review".

Well I think a review should tell a viewer how a server feels to play. I construct my videos in a way that conveys how I felt about the server.

If I made videos to the spec you are saying:
They would be boring,
I'd be bored making them,
They would be just a list of works / doesn't work,
They would be 10 times the duration,
I wouldn't have time to spend with my family or go to work.

Either way, we are both wrong. A review is much simpler than either of what we are saying. A review is just an opinion, nothing more. A valid review could also be "It was shit" or "I liked it".

But my main point is what I brought up first. My reviews are not lists. My reviews are the video representations of the feelings I got while playing the server. Not, whether or not spells have correct cast times are not.
