[Retail] No flying on future expansions

You can read the Ion’s interview with Polygon here.

Ion wrote:There's more room for exploration, for secrets, for discovery and overall immersion in the world. At this point, we feel that outdoor gameplay in World of Warcraft is ultimately better without flying. We're not going to be reintroducing the ability to fly in Draenor, and that's kind of where we're at going forward.

If you check WoWs General Discussion forum, you will see all the buzz that this interview caused. People saying that will quit, that want to freeze their account... The community of that game has became so attached to convenience, that even a thing like no flying on future expansions seems game breaking. C'mon, seriously? Seems that stay cloistered in a garrison playing farmville really messed their minds up. For me, flying always was a bad to the game, not only because it shrinks the world, but also for turning ground mounts obsolete, as well as allow you to easily avoid a fight, or any danger.

Imo, this is a little big move to try fix the things.

I really wanted flying mounts until they were introduced. It's a cool idea, but changes the entire game.

I agree. The 2.9 million sub loss in a matter of a few months must've hit them hard, realising they're losing a lot of veteran players :P

I personally liked flying. It was an alternative way to explore the world that helped when you had already done it on foot a dozen times and were looking for something new. I do agree however that it made a lot of things way too simple and took a lot of risk/danger out of the picture. I think flying with limitations would've been a good approach.

My memory's a bit fuzzy but I think they got flying right with BC, WotLK, and MoP: only obtainable at max level or near max level and for a hefty price that could only be used in certain places. To me, you spent all that time and effort questing, grouping up and running instances, grinding, farming, leveling, all the way from 60 to 68, 70 to 78, and 85 to 90, then there was that promise of finally being able to fly at end-game if you had enough gold. It was a whole new take on the expansion. Kind of gave you something to work towards and look forward to. Places like the Storm Peaks were exceptionally good because you essentially had to fly to be able to explore and quest efficiently. It added value to the game at a reasonable cost that wasn't freely handed out.

I was disappointed at first when I heard 6.0 wouldn't have flying but was content with the concept that it would be introduced in a later patch once everyone consumed all of Draenor's content and grew bored with it. That hope waned when the 6.1 PTR notes came out saying flying was on hold. I get the concept of wanting people to go out and explore the world on foot and making things somewhat difficult, but for a lot of people, flying is their way of going out into the world and exploring. Few people like to sit on two years' worth of content they've done to death over and over again consuming it in nearly the exact same manner as they did all their previous characters.

For the short time I played WoD, I looked forward to flying as a reason for me to finally leave my garrison, but that never happened. Either way, I'm not that bummed about it. Flying wasn't a deal breaker for me. I happily stuck it out but ended up unsubbing for other reasons. There are many other things plaguing retail WoW at the moment.

While this is a step in the right direction, there are just so many other more imporant issues that needs to be dealt with. For starters, completley remove that garrison. How did they come up with that idea anyways, turning a mmorpg game into a single player rpg.

I can't say it is a horrible decision. I love my flying mounts, don't get me wrong.. but it's more because they are something to marvel at. It took away a lot from the game honestly and if I still played it wouldn't disappoint me.

However, I don't think this is going to fix the fact they are losing players. They've gone a bad direction since WotLK in my opinion.

Wtf they plan more expansions? there isnt anything left to kill... i mean having to jump arround in time just to squeeze lore out of it is already ridiculus... i wonder if ragnaros gets another shot:-)

Ragnaris has already been done again, twice if you count the MC event.

What if your flying mount just replaced the flight paths? basically free flights forever, that way you can still customize your flying mount, marvel at it, save some money in the long run, etc...

Just a thought that will never reach Blizzard :D
