how does dressing up raise money for charity?

i'm suppose to dress up for work soon for charity so i just started wondering how it actually works

I don't know. Do you have to pay money when dressing up?

One of my previous employers used to have "Jeans Friday" where they let employees wear jeans instead of business casual for $1. Supposedly all the money they made went into some kind of fund for activities or something. I don't know, I never participated in it.
