Virtual Space

Hey chums,

I'm an Undergraduate student in Social Anthropology writing my dissertation on how sociality can occur within a virtual world. WoW is my fieldsite! Currently I'm compiling information and data that I will be using in this dissertation (all contributions are anonymous). Any responses to this really help me out and I appreciate them.

Do you see World of Warcraft to present a space which is different to the physical space we can inhabit in everyday life? Are there different rules to the space in virtual worlds? Do you ever forget the physical space you are in because you are so focussed in virtual space?

I think a person can exist in two spaces at once, since one of these is physical and the other could be virtual. There is no contradiction in this. The virtual space allows for us to interact with people who are in vastly different physical spaces to us, through the mediation of a computer screen.

Thanks again for any contributions - makes my research a whole lot more interesting!

With kisses and spits,
Freddy

-Yes, this is what makes addicts use this outlet as a form of escape. With increase of lawsuits in various locations of the world i feel this is also why the quality of mmorpgs are being diluted and more casual oriented to deter a mental "Dependancy" on these virtual escapes from the real world

Are there different rules to the space in virtual worlds?

-Yes, Obviously the laws of gravity and our inability to feel pain as well as the concept of magic. It's almost as if the creator of the virtual space is for lack of a better example A "god"/creator.

Do you ever forget the physical space you are in because you are so focussed in virtual space?

-Yes, I find it quite common to tune out my surroundings especially with soundproof gamer headset on. It allows me to easily dis-associate with myself and build a sense of immersion as if I am the actual character.
(The same sensation of watching a motion picture in theatre and the passive feeling of being infront of the story unfolding as if you were there physically witnessing.
