Macbook battery drains while plugged in when playing WoW

by Gowanus » Mon Nov 23, 2015 9:08 pm

I am running a 2015 15" Macbook Pro with an Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB, a 2.8ghz i7 and 16gb of ram.

Sometimes when I am playing this game, my battery will drain to 1% even though I have my laptop plugged in. A quick google search told me that if the laptop is drawing more than 85w worth of power, it will drain the battery at the same time.

While it is using integrated graphics, this is a very fancy new computer that shouldn't have any problem handling a 10 year old game. Even with most settings lowered, I am still running into problems with this.

Are there any settings that could potentially cause this to happen? I'm usually running it in windowed mode and have a few browser tabs and Spotify open, but that's the only potential conflict I can think of.

I don't know how macs work, but on windows laptops you can change your power settings to high performance/balanced/power saving. Normally it's set to balanced/high performance when plugged in and power saving when unplugged. Maybe check for something similar and make sure it's not set to high performance?

The problem here, becuase at first, WoW was only for windows, try to upgrade your drivers.

Read through this thread for some insights, particularly radellaf's post on page 2. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/27 ... 5&tstart=0 makes me think there might be something wrong with your computer.

I think when you're performing intensive tasks, the computer will draw on the battery first and play catch up with charging. I'm using an older and crappier Mac laptop than yours and having no problems. If unplugged though, the game still burns through the battery rapidly despite the fact that the game is very old.

You could try some in game performance settings too: viewtopic.php?f=32&t=1100

Good luck.

I'm a bit late to the party but I'll add my thoughts. I would check for other computer issues. When you're playing, take a look at what's using a lot of energy (displayed in the menu bar in the newest OS X).

I'm playing on a similar setup, 2013 13" rMBP, with iris graphics. The game hasn't been very taxing at all, one whatever default settings it had when I installed it.

I've played it on a 2012 Macbook Air and while it drained the battery pretty fast it didn't deplete it if it was plugged in. It is an old game and hasn't been updated for the latest Mac OS (especially if you're on El Capitan) so there could be a conflict there, and if you have a retina screen that could also be the problem- maybe try playing full screen but at a much lower resolution.

Other than that I'd suggest looking into using Parallels or Crossover or WINE to run a virtual Windows version of the game instead. You'll get the added benefit of being able to use Zeppelins and Boats without issue.
