I am new to this server and I honestly think Nostalrius is an accomplishment. I mean 7k players online on a private server is madness (even for fun servers).
The problem I have with this server though it is the problem I have with the other private servers. It's that fear.
I played on Emerald Dream and the time spent on it was awesome. The server even though had it's bugs worked like a charm.Dungeons worked properly and people were raiding seriously.Emerald Dream had and has only one problem.
It died 2 years after it came out.100 players on peak times. And honestly I blame this server right here.
What is it that makes this server better than the others , why did so many people came to this and did not came to emerald dream to play.(it was an ok server too). Why should I continue to invest my time in growing a character so that after 1 or 2 years , this server will become as dead as the other?
On a more important note : What is the staff like?

Maybe you should just enjoy the journey and quit worrying about the destination?

Your Emerald Dream story is anecdotal. Statistically, ED was up for longer than the duration of vanilla WoW, and it was fairly populated for a chunk of that time
All realms die eventually, usually due to players abandoning them. To that extent, I'd say the future of this realm is more assured than any other like it. Nost could lose large chunks of its population and still be a healthy vibrant server.

ED didn't work like a charm, there's your problem already. When I played there - admittedly a very short time, didn't reach 60 - I came across somewhat annoying bugs already in the early leveling progress. Which were quite surprising when the server had been up & running for years at that point. Now, I'm not claiming that Nost is bug-free or issue-free, as it certainly isn't, but things are being fixed and the server is more stable than ED was with a far more massive population. So that's a promising thing.
But as freetime and Setup said, anything can happen and you shouldn't worry too much. You might die in a car crash tomorrow, making everything pointless. A random asteroid could wipe out all human life on Earth. Or Nostalrius runs for happily for years and you'll have the best time of your life. Who knows?

Nostalrius had the opportunity of launching during a time when retail WoW players were growing frustrated and disgruntled with Warlords of Draenor. WoD had terrible end-game content and 6.1 wasn't looking too promising. Then when it went live in February and people discovered there was nothing to do outside of garrisons, a lot of people unsubbed and turned elsewhere to get their WoW fix. The fact that Blizzard basically gave players the middle finger and essentially said 6.2 is the last major patch didn't help either which is why people have stuck around here for a lot longer.
It was a perfect blend of WoD straying so far from the original WoW formula and players leaving in droves realizing new WoW isn't nearly as fun as old WoW that made Nostalrius explode in terms of population. If the Suggestions forum is any indication, there's a lot of former retail players here; people asking for dual specs, new WoD models, PvE server, etc. That being said, this server could shut down tomorrow and I wouldn't be the least bit upset in terms of losing "progress." As others have said, it's about the journey, not the destination, and I've had more fun on this server with the community the past few months leveling to 60 than I have in all the years I played Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, and Warlords of Draenor.
