Interested in playing.

by gaminggeek2015 » Tue Sep 08, 2015 12:46 pm

Hey guys, I've been thinking about Nostalrius for some time now and I'm very interested in playing. I'm just a little scared to and seek reassurance :P.

I, like many others (even though Blizzard and their fan boys seem to think we're only a small, insignificant number), have become very tired of WoW. Since MoP I've found it less and less entertaining and I long for the old days. I started playing in late 2005 and remember the old days fondly. Now it's so ridiculously easy and dumbed down. Even the little things frustrate me, such as infinite throwing/ranged ammo, no longer needing to buy poisons, trainers no longer training and insta-learning things upon dinging. I don't want to pick a few herbs in Elwynn and find my character has dinged level 14 in a level 1-10 zone just from a few quests and herbing. I want to level *with* the zone, not far exceed the level range for it to be too easy, within 1/3 of the questlines. Even without heirlooms, just by mining or herbing and doing quests, you can far out-level the zone. Killing one silver rare can give you almost an entire level of unrested xp! You even get xp now for going afk to use the toilet!

I've looked at lots of videos online and this one is hands down the most recommended.

I'm a bit scared about my main WoW account getting banned, as I've spent quite a bit of IRL cash on it (subs since 2005, store pets/mounts and the new WoW tokens etc.). Is there a safe way to play without Blizzard catching me :P? I read the FAQ where they say that Blizzard won't care if you keep paying, but what if they decide to care? I read somewhere else that the Blizz updater scans your files and can detect these second launchers and report them back to Blizzard who can then ban you, or worse.

I'm not very technical so I don't know if I can install a second version of the game to an external drive or anything, or use any sort of software to mask my IP etc., I'm not good with computers. Can a different folder on the same drive (I note you state c:\ instead of program files) really work, or will Blizzard still detect it? Could I use a secondary, external USB HDD that's perma-plugged in? My WoW installation (paid Blizz one) is on c:\World of Warcraft. I read somewhere that using Program Files folder could cause issues, so I installed the main game to c:\ directly. I have not downloaded or installed your version yet, I wanted to seek advice first as I am a noob.

I have a second PC, boxed up, from 2007 which is still in perfect working order and condition. I used to play WoW on it until I upgraded (for other games) last year. I last played Cata on it without issue, so it's viable as a gaming PC, still after all these years. If I load up the old PC, and it has no Blizzard software on it at all, and play Nostalrius on it, can Blizzard still see me, maybe by IP? Would they be able to see the same IP connecting to and old version server and the new one?

Finally, this is PvE isn't it? I saw in another thread somewhere, someone asking another person if they were moving to the PvE server when it launches, but that was only a week or two ago...this is the PvE one isn't it?

I hate and suck at PvE :D.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Can I just add that in the time between posting this (three hours ago) and now, I've done more reading but I am, unfortunately, more confused about the PvE thing now. I see that Nost is PvP, not PvE as I thought, man there are a lot of misleading posts and videos :P.

Official posts say an announcement is forthcoming in a few weeks, whereas high level posters seem to say the PvE server was opened a few days ago (after the initial 30 minute trial). It's hard to know which is correct.

Thank you for your time in advance and thank you to the people who made this all possible.

Currently there is no PvE server, only the PvP server. A PvE realm is coming in the future but there is, as of now, no fixed date for its release.

Blizzard does not care if you play on private servers. For additional safety, do not use same account name or password with us that you use in retail. You also should not advertise any private server at Blizzard's official forums, as that has gotten players banned from them in the past.

Just remember that you need to separate WoW installations - one up-to-date for retail, and another 1.12.1 version for Nostalrius. Do not install them in the same folder!

Read this thread and my reply at the very bottom; essentially you're not at risk of getting your retail account banned.
https://forum.nostalrius.org/viewtopic. ... 740#p68524

Blizzard's Battle.net application does indeed scan your computer (If you configure it to) but the worst thing that can happen is if it finds a really old version of WoW installed on your computer, it'll force it to update to the current retail patch (6.2.2 last I checked). It doesn't report anything back to Blizzard other than the fact that you've got a really, really old WoW install on your computer. Why would they ban you for that? Who's to say you played vanilla WoW ages ago, unsubbed or got a new computer, and decided to fire up your old computer one day or resub years later and you simply need to update your client? Banning for that would be far too much trouble for Blizzard with angry customers calling because they were unjustly banned.

Just do like everyone else does: have multiple WoW clients installed on your computer. You can keep your retail client in one folder and install the Nostalrius client to another folder (E.g.: Retail in C:\Games\World of Warcraft and Nostalrius in C:\Nostalrius\World of Warcraft Classic). Lots of people playing here have multiple WoW clients installed for multiple private servers. As long as you install each one to a separate location and differentiate the shortcuts to each WoW.exe, you shouldn't have any problem running WoW for both retail and/or private servers.

Additionally, Nost is 100% PvP at the moment with a PvE server coming in the near future. For more information, read these threads:

Thank you for your replies. I feel a bit better about it all now. I think, for my OCD peace of mind, I might fish out my old Dimension 9200 tower and play Nost WoW on that, without any other Blizzard software on the machine.

I think I'll wait until the PvE server launches. I have a wee bilateral wrist problem and am awaiting corrective surgery, and that's my excuse for sucking at and hating PvP :P.

I'm SO excited for the PvE realm, you can't imagine!

I was wrong in my original post. When I think back, it was Cata that ruined WoW for me.

I miss Auberdine...I actually miss, out of everything, Southshore the most. I miss the lovely atmospheric quests on the Wetlands and Arathi borders like the stranded dwarf who needs to get his drinks to Southshore within x number of minutes...or the dwarf corpse (Sully Bulloo or something?) under the rubble in the ocean where you have to take his letter to his widow in Ironforge. I miss actually having to buy poison, arrows, bullets or other things, instead of them being infinite. I like to visit poison vendors and for their stock to actually be poison and not just vials now that their poison stocks are obsolete. I like to see trainers to train and not miraculously learn things upon dinging. I loved the old diverse talent trees. I miss the old Plaguelands. I even miss finding and selling tomes (Gift of the Wild etc) instead of them being grey trash now. I miss Paladin auras. I miss...everything :(.

There's an old phrase about 'if its not broken, it doesn't need fixing' and Blizz should really have bore that in mind.

I see all of these excuses on the official forums, the fan boys 'wall of no' to vanilla servers and it just boils my blood. Clearly, there is a huge demand for vanilla servers. I bet any money, that you won't see 5000 players on a retail group of servers...now they're cross realm with 2-3-4-5 other realms...I bet even those don't have anywhere near those numbers...so clearly there is a huge demand. The best they can do is point to some obscure forum poll where only 71 people voted and it was like 45%/55% for/against vanilla servers.

They make all these excuses about time, money and deleting the old files...yet Nost managed to revive Vanilla WoW without charging a penny.

I miss it so much. I could create 1000 Night Elves and NEVER get bored of Teldrassil, Darkshore or Ashenvale.

Many here share your excitement for the upcoming PvE realm. I'm nerding out so hard over it! :D

Yeah, Cataclysm was the final straw for me. Though the game had been going downhill for quite awhile before that. And current retail WoW is unplayable to me. But I don't care what Blizz does with WoW anymore, Vanilla is the best MMO I've ever played.

I've tried, for almost two months now to get back into WoW but I just can't. I levelled from 85-91 in the FIRST zone of MoP...I had to turn XP off in Stormwind just so that I could try and tackle MoP content at MoP levels, albeit a level higher than the cap...I just can't get into MoP. I like the thought of the Garrison stuff, but I am a little OCD and have to finish MoP before I can face WoD, but I can't face MoP :-/.

I levelled my newest main from 1-85 when Cata launched, to experience the redesigned world in full. It wasn't that bad but I did miss a great many things that were lost, and still do. I didn't like not having Southshore at all, and the redesigned Darkshore wasn't for me. It's just MoP...I can't put my fingers on why but I just can't get into it. I wasn't keen on WotLK end game stuff, but didn't mind the levelling and quests.

I've created so many new toons to level over the past few weeks and it's just so unfulfilling and unrewarding. I swear, you can do 1/3 of the starting zone quests, pick a few herbs and everything will be grey to you and 2-shotable in no time. With heirlooms, there's no point even having DoTs because you 1 shot everything.

I have mild...or severe depending on your view, OCD and I HAVE to collect everything. If I take any time off from WoW, I always feel lost when I return and like there's too much to go back and find and do. I preferred the old days, when there was less to find and do, but it was more challenging and harder to find or get. Achievements and account-wide items are another gripe. I actually don't mind the grinds as much. I'd rather work hard for a Winterspring Sabre, than have the Horde version and, when I roll and Alliance toon, find that I got the counterpart for free.
