Picking a realm

by Rainaras » Mon Jan 04, 2016 3:17 pm

Greetings Nostalrius!

I'm a longtime player on Feenix who recently got forced to move on to new adventures due to them upgrading their vanilla server to 2.0 and TBC. (sad story) I'm sure you'll be seeing more of us in the near future..
I've decided to give this project a go but I'm torn as to what realm to choose and hope you can point me in the right direction.

I'm all PvE and more or less hate PvP. However I always enjoyed the thrill of running (real retail vanilla style :p). But due to the very high population on your PvP server (I'm used to a much lower on Feenix) I'm wondering how big of a pain leveling would be and if it's doable without wanting to kill myself after lvl30.

What's your view on this conundrum? Thankful for your input.

Cheers,
Rain

I had this same dilemma, but a friend insisted that for social and endgame raiding reasons PvP realm was the way to go.

There's just so much more action on the pvp server. I've always been a Priest which has made much of my world pvp about tactical retreating than damage dealing. Im not very good at PvP (yet :p) and the ganking can sure be annoying but, on the whole the higher pop makes it more social to me - you often have to group to survive which, whilst frustrating, does give a real sense of camaraderie. All 40+ Alliance players (and probs horde too) can all reflect on the chaotic craziness of STV, which was certainly my first proper intro to world PvP ready or not! And for all the ganks and teamkills retribution is usually swift (neither side has the monopoly on 60s in low lvl areas). So whilst at times frustrating, even immensely so, I think the PvP server decision was the right one for me... even if I'd rather just heal things to death XD.

Also dev team keeps tweaking things to deal with high pop, herbs and other spawns recently got tweaked to deal with high numbers.

Due to the current situation on the PvP server you might have to either wait or roll on the PvE server. Pvp server is suffering terribly due to overpopulation and large influx of Chinese players who don't speak English. Also, the PvE has yet to see any raids open except for MC and Onyxia, so you won't have a problem finding a guild there (i suppose)

This says it all: go PvE.

The ganking on the PvP server is endless, and if you already hate PvP, and have no intentions of doing "serious" PvP later, then by all means go PvE.

The PvE server is smaller than the PvP server (which is also a good thing: easier to quest), but even I used the word "smaller" here, the server is still 3x bigger than a Feenix server at its peak.

Thank you for your answers, guys!

ettubrut sure has a point. A PvP enviroment is so much different from a PvE one. As much as I dislike being ganked I still feel that there are factions for a reason. I'm just wondering, since I've only ever played on PvP servers in both retail and private, if the PvP is too much on Nostalrius PvP realm? Compared to any retail realm back in the day for example.

In response to Valgatur, I think that all servers "suffer" from Chinese and language barriers sooner or later. Feenix did too for awhile.

Mimma, thank you for your input. The PvE server does sound like a PvEers dream, I'm just worried I'll be bored..! Sure, I want to raid and follow progression all the way to KT but when you say "endless" do you mean it's simply impossible to keep world buffs before you reach the instance? And will you be corpse camped for hours on end?

You will have to skip certain zones when levelling - most notable Gankington Vale and Searing Horde :-)

World buffs can survive if you run together as a full 40 man raid to the instance (most guilds does that) - attempting to do this solo will will be considered heroic !
