Am I going to be yelled at for picking bad classes/specs?

While waiting to download the stuff for this awesome server, I started to look up stuff on old classes and such. I keep reading stuff about how certain classes were considered useless and would be kicked on sight, such as a shadow priest, or a retribution paladin. Was this exaggerated, was it elitism, and will it happen to me? And I suppose even trying to be a lock tank would be out of the question.

People wont invite you to parties. Easy as that. If you run around as a retadin or protpala nobody can stop you but you will not raid as one. Maybe as shadowpriest to help the WLs but normally people will try to avoid you.

Bullshit, Get a good guild and there is nothing stopping you from playing the sub optimal specs. Only prot paladin might be really to gimped to get a raid spot. Ret, feral, moonkin, shadow, elemental, enhancement all have small benefits to a raid if played well. That means you are not just a dps but a emergency healer/tanker/debuffer. Its 40 man raids and untill naxx stuff really isnt hard enough to make minmaxing matter.

In Vanilla I raided with a ret, 2? shadowpriests, one feral and a armsWarrior (Me). We killed C'Thun and came to the 4 Horsemen in Naxx, so you probably will get kicked from a few groups but just find a good Guild and you should be OK.

Just to be a 2nd voice, yes, you should be fine. I often grouped with a pala who tanked for example (although only in the later levels). Dps just needs to be sensible, but then they also do with warriors. I also consistently raided with a shadow priest and dps warrior (mc, bwl and aq). You will be more sought after though if you play the spec that you're class is considered more potent as.

Considering the number of guilds I see recruiting on a daily basis, I wouldn't worry too much.

Why prot/ret paladin is bad? Prot pala is weak in tanking on vanilla or what? I played on tbc or higher so i don't understand that.

Vanilla prot paladins don't have a taunt. While it's doable in some upper level dungeons, not too sure about raids asfaik.

Prot paladins can tank 5-man instances, no probs. They can't tank raids. Ret paladins deal good enough DPS during the leveling process but their damage output is not high enough to justify bringing them along in raids and as they don't have the versatility of druids, they are doomed to be only healers. But that's only in raids. It's a different story in PvP.
