If you are impale spec'd prot warrior you have imp rend which means rend does 198 damage for 10 rage and that is not mitigated by armor.

Heroic strike does 138 damage (lowered by armor) for 15 rage and it replaced an auto attack that would have generated more rage.

If you are farming as an impale spec'd prot warrior and can't kill things faster than 21 seconds, it's your best damage per rage.

So ya, the ability is mostly useless but if you actually understand the game mechanics, there are corner cases where it has it's uses.

Who the fuck farms as protection? And even so, rend is STILL a waste of rage in all cases outside of pvp. If mobs are living the full duration of rend you are not farming, you are beating your head against concrete.

No one wants to farm as protection but it will soon cost 100g to switch back and forth each time. 99.99% of people who farm in protection are full time tanks without an alt to farm with. In many cases the increased earnings won't reach 100g before their next raid. This is the same as a priest farming in holy spec.

This ^.

And before people mouth off, L2Alt, though I am all but full epic in every slot, I spend any time I have available running 5 mans non stop for people in guild that are not as fortunate as myself. Over 25 jail breaks alone, if that gives you some idea of my commitment to the greater good. When I do farm, it is usually for tank food aor fire elementals for fire pots. I fish a lot, as many MT mats come from this and herb when i can. Blasted lands doesnt take much time to get battle elixir for rag night.

Who farms as proc? Me, the guy who is selfless and in turn guildies help me when they can.

Im leveling as prot and I use rend. Not many choices at lower levels. If you can't farm as prot you have no damn business being prot in the first place. In other words, if you can't carry yourself solo, you have no business BEING CARRIED in dungeons! Leeching off the healers. A lot of times, these healers wont have top end gear and might have fairly weak heals. Your job as tank is to stay alive with whatever you have to work with, including weak or even dead healers. If you can't do that, delete the character and reroll a hunter like 90% of the other newbies.

If you use rend while tanking for any reason at all you've completely failed in your job as a tank. Sunder Armor is better 100% of the time, because it generates threat while rend does not.

Rend is used by prot warriors for farming is what they mean. They did NOT say it was for tanking instances, but I agree that if you use rend as a tank, you are doing it horribly wrong.
