Aspiring tank, forced to go fury?

Hello Warriors.
I'm hitting 60 soon, and I'm looking forward to being smashed with a hammer by Ragnaros.
The thing is, everyone keeps telling me it's not going to happen very soon. Not only do I need to be properly geared, there are also many other people who want to main tank, and only a few actually get to do it.
So I was thinking, I can off-tank in raids and tank 5-mans as fury, but I can't really do proper damage as prot.
Is it even worth it to spec prot if I won't be main tanking, and if my raids are going to force me to DPS for quite a while anyway?

A progressing guild needs 3-4 protection tanks so you'll still find work even as an OT. A guild farming MC can handle that with 2 protection tanks.

Find a guild that is recruiting that isnt in MC yet. Grind the 5 mans, assert your tanking dominance early and often, be knowlegeable, informative, direct but not an asshole and you should be number 1 or 2 tank without a problem.

You won't have a hard time becoming MT or close to it if you do what Undertanker says. However, there are a few downsides.
1. If your guild dies, you will be set back to square one if you want to MT.
2. Good luck farming mats efficiently in tank spec.
3. You NEED to have EVERY consumable that will optimize your tanking ability. Number 2 makes this even worse.
4. You better have near perfect attendance if you want to stay MT in any serious guild.
5. Though you will get tier pieces first, that means you have to get the best available merchants by the next raid. Some of those enchants are expensive as hell.

Tanking mats are not tough to get. Be an alch/herb and level fishing. Fishing will make your 2k armor pots,450 armor pots, you will get 15 stam rum, and mats for agil pots. Food is easy to make, should only be a couple gold for consumables that fishingdoesnt help provide.
Attendance is important.
As a MT, be a strong leader, not an ass hole and help put out drama fires. The guild should stay together.
