Defense Cap and Gear Choice

It's obvious to any decent raid tank that you need 440 defense, but I noticed that the tier pieces don't have that much defense on them. Does that mean that cloaks, necks, rings, and trinkets are useless without a lot of defense on them since you won't reach cap otherwise, or can you trade 5 defense for 1% dodge?

Def-cap isnt required in current content. However, it is a good goal to try get it. On a personal note, I would take 5 def over 1% dodge if I wasnt capped.

Rember that 8 def equals 1%mitigation from dodge, parry, and force mob to miss. Not counting block chance and reduces chance to be crit as well.

While tanking, you will be using blues with def, rings and trinket with def, neck cloak and shield. You should tank with 2/8 t2, 3/8t1 for the block value and rest good def/stam blues with stam / hp enchants.

8/8 T1 is your bis 5 man set for the imp sunder armor threat as you dont get to HS much and are rage starved. 5/8 helps rage, and spamming sunder is super threat.

Gear for tanks is situational, I have about 60 gear items i rotate (keep some banked till needed). And get outfitter addon.

I have a max hp set - 6k unbuffed (110 def)
Raid tank set (140+ def) 5,300 unbuffed.
5 man set 8/8 5,100 hp T1, +15 all resist from rag cloak onx ring skull shield
Fr set 316 5,200 hp 60 def.

You lose a lot of inventory banl.space, but you will wreck content.

You're mixing the words here mate.

Mitigation = how much damage you can reduce incoming in VALUE, meaning extra armor,block value,crushings

Avoidance = how much damage you can avoid ( parry dodge miss )

i agree with most you said later on, you need the defense from off pieces for sure.

p.s if you're off tank you don't really have to focus on getting def cap ( that's main tank's job )
off tanks need avoidance, but since you dont have the gear option to do that you're stick mostly to what your main tank is wearing :).
