Nostalrius Begins - Quality wow vanilla realm (1.12)

I currently have the Morris Medallion and I was wondering if Eskhandar's would be an upgrade for my normal tank set.

I'm 2nd in line for Medallion of Steadfast Might and was thinking Eskhandar's might be useful until then. I'm normally raiding with 431 Defense and Quel proc on top of that, 5429 hp unbuffed. If I need to be def cap I am equiping a Hardened Stone Band and Ardent Custodian.

Medallion is giving me:
70 HP
10 Def (.4 dodge/Block/Parry)

Eskhandar's would be:
170 HP
1% dodge
1% crit

If I understand current mechanics correctly, block isn't nearly as big of a deal as dodge or parry since I am not blocking a large ammount of damage when it occurs?

It looks to me that Eskhandar's is a clear choice over Medallion, am I wrong?

yes, its much better. unless you need to be def capped for the given fight. i run normally closer to 420 def in most fights.

I'm trying to break down the math on this comparison. I'm essentially trying to compare 10 def vs. 1% dodge.

10 def = .4 dodge, .4 parry, .4 block, .4 crit chance reduction and increases your attacker's chance to miss. Can someone fill me in on how much it increases the attacker's chance to miss?

Dodge and parry are essentially the same since they avoid an attack outright. So for comparisons purpose we can add .4 dodge and .4 parry = .8 then subtract thay from the 1% dodge were comparing against. So now we are looking at .2 dodge vs. .4 block, .4 crit % reduction and attacker's increased miss chance.

Crit % reduction does the same as dodge in terms of mitigation. Aka they can be compared 1:1 since a crit is 2x dmg and dodge is 0 dmg.

So if I'm thinking about this correctly 10 defense has the following advantages over 1% dodge in terms of mitigation

.2 crit chance reduction, .4 block and some arbitrary ammount of increased attacker miss chance.

So if thats true were weighing 100 HP and 1% crit against the mitigation in the paragraph above.

If this logic checks out I think I prefer Eskhandar's as an off tank since the crit will help my rage generation and 100 HP is nothing to scoff at.

Eskhandar's is worse then Morris in terms of mitigation.
10*0.04 = 0.4% parry
10*0.04 = 0.4% dodge
10*0.04 = 0.4% more chance to be missed
10*0.04 = 0.4% block
10*0.04 = 0.4% less chance to be critted

This gives you 1.2% avoidance, 0.4% block and 0.4% less chance to be critted weighed against 1 dodge, 1 crit and 100 hp.

Assuming you're not fully BWL geared I would atleast prefer the medallion. What kind of rage generation problems do you have anyway? The rage you get from attacking is really small compared to the rage generation from taking damage anyways. 1% crit isn't gonna make any real difference. If you get starved in MC fights etc use rage pots, the fights are so short it should get you by.

Furthermore, offtanking rarely has the issue of threat, merely because your target isn't being focused from start. Only scenario I can see this doesn't apply is Broodlord, which is not solved by getting 1 more crit but rather using berserker rage at blast waves and not dumping rage. May I add that the plethora of dps consumables availables helps alot at broodlord
