When will my character get better?

I played a bit in vanilla and I remember that combat was harder than it is in the real game now, but I don't remember it as being this hard. I'm a level 16 rogue and every combat encounter brings me down to 50% or less health. If I aggro 2 mobs it is instant death, sometimes I can't even kill a regular mob the same level as me. I don't want the game to be easy, but some of my experiences have just been ridiculous. Will my character get better at combat or will I have to struggle the entire way to 60?

Sort of, but Rogue leveling in my experience is fast but dangerous all the way to 60. Bandages are essential, and right now I'd recommend getting a solid pair of swords or maces over daggers for leveling ASAP.
Like with Warriors, stay away from grinding high level mobs if you can help it, or it's glances/crushes all day.

I had the same problem man. Made me want to quit my rogue. Around level 24 or 26, it gets a LOT better. I'm 37 currently and run through 10ish mobs before needing to eat/bandage. Yes, I'm combat.

Early levels are a hassle, i got off easy cus i play with a friend. But im 24 now and my dmg is pretty wild, i have 2 nice blue daggers (im assassination) and i can take down a mob in under 3 sek if im lucky with crits, i can ambush for 400+ dmg too, dont leave rogue, i can promise you that it will get better. You should go cooking and first aid, they will give you some nice health advantages.

Rogues are actually easier to level than what people may think, we might be a bit squishy until lvl ~ 30 but we don't have it as bad as some other classes (priests, warriors...) In my experience two things are gonna have a big influence on your ability to kill mobs fast : weapons and spec. You must get good weapons as early as you can, easiest way would be from dungeons. swords or maces are optimal for pve, but if you have a dagger with high damage and good dps take it of course, but swords usually have a wider damage range. Put your slowest weapon with the highest dmg in your mainhand so you can take the most out of your ablities. RFD and SM have quests that give you really good swords that will carry you to lvl 50+ and even 60 if you don't find anything better before. As for the spec, my advice at low lvl would be to get the cheaper sinister strike in combat and then go assassination, which has really good damage boosts at the early tiers. Then when you're around 40 respec full combat to get blade flurry and adrenaline rush, the real fun starts here :p Oh and very important, never fight without poisons! go for instant poison x2, it really makes a difference. Also first aid is almost mandatory if you want efficient leveling.

Another godsend Rogue weapon is the
Thrash Blade from the Maraudon quest. You can get it as low as level 45 and it'll carry you to level 60 and beyond. Mara's not open here yet, though.

Rogues, just like any other melee class is very dependent on weapons. It might be worth dropping a couple silver for a good slow main hand if you're combat and make sure to do any dungeon that might drop good weapons. Rogues are slow until you start getting good weapons so look into what quests might be worth going out of your way to do like getting the Outlaw Sabre from the quest in BFD. Also, if you get 2 pieces of "of the fang" gear your poisons will do more damage.

So many say combat for lvling, but the least gear dependant way is daggers. Instance farming for weapons will slow you down. Get cc watch and energy watch add o, very important.
Learn to gouge with 55+ energy and right before your next energy tick. You will back stab rigjt before CC wares off. Kidney shot with 2 combo points with 45+ energy and right before next energy tick, will allow youtto back stab again. You take minimal damage, can solo elites by lvl 42 with out being cooldown dependent.
Best enchant for dagger is +weapon damage if you can get it, due to high % of weapon damage ur abilities use.
With get 2/2 in assassin tree, go into combat for 30% crit on backstab, and 5% hit, then go down sub for 45%crit on ambush. This gives your ambush 95% crit before agility!!! Remember to ambush right before your energy tick.
From here i like imp sap. Makes camps a joke, and a lot of run, and u are actually useful in cc in instances. I then get cooldown reduction on evasion, and sprint. Every other pool evasion will be up. Pair it with ghostly strike for 65% dodge, not including agility and parry. Finish your points in the assassin tree through the 50s.
Caster mobs will be your grind mob of choice. This style takes patience, and time to master, but is a super great, not gear dependent style of play that is great for solo questing, instances and world pvp.
Join the combat crew when it is time to raid.

Rogue is weak till about lvl 29. Make use of gouge bandage during a fight, even at 60%hp. Better than killing, then having to bandage. That extra time you save adds up when you are looking at the long haul to 60. And it starts the 1 min cooldown on recently bandaged earlier so two pulls later it is up again. Best exp per hour will be similar to warrior, mobs 2-4 lvls lower.
Hope this helps.
