Questions Leveling a Pet?

Questions Leveling a Pet?

by Kazarak » Wed Sep 16, 2015 3:33 pm

I'm halfway through 26 and my pet just dinged 25. I've had my bear since level 11 and he's the only pet I play with. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to keep multiple pets when one pet can't even keep up with me in levels.

Am I supposed to capture a new pet every few levels at or above my level to keep it my level?

On that note, I've never tried to tame a critter above my level. If I tame a 27 animal while I'm 26, will it stay 27?

Is there some way to speed up my pet's XP gain?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

You can't tame pets above your level. Just use your pet and keep it alive. It won't get xp when dead.

Does anyone know if a pet's happiness or loyalty level affect XP gain?

It doesn't as far as I know. Of course you'll want to keep a pet happy anyway for the extra damage, and the training points it gains for every loyalty level. Your pet will always fall slightly behind as you gain XP from completing quests, but the difference should never become too huge. Keeping more than 1 pet at your level while leveling is impossible unless you keep taming new ones, so don't even bother until you're 60 and need different pets for PvE/PvP.

The fastest way to level pets is to kill enemies that are in the yellow range to the pet. So if you are level 35 and go tame a level 20 pet, you should start leveling it on enemies in the 18-22 range and work your way back up to your level. Nostralius is before the pet automatically leveled to within 3 levels, so you have to make up those levels yourself.

I thought back when I first started playing (back in early BC ~2.1) that you had to kill mobs that were at least green to YOU to give your pet exp, but apparently this is not the case for Nostalrius/Vanilla?

This of course makes leveling a very low level pet far far easier - just blast away at grey mobs for quick pet exp.

And yes, pet happiness, pet loyalty have no impact on exp gain - its a flat amount that scales with each level.
Course a happy pet does more DPS, and gets your pet out of the food guzzling "unruly" loyalty level quicker.
