iirc (I couldn't find videos so I might be wrong) this was possible in retail, but the pack was either linked at some point in vanilla or at release, since you had to deal with both mobs not just the king..... if I recall correctly the strat used was kill the healer first but it took significantly more effort than the king by himself

If you look at the old Hunter vs World video of Dire Maul he doesn't attempt to split them, which suggests either he couldn't or never tried despite being aware of how to split other packs. Linking them would be a reasonable way to slow down the tribute farming while still leaving it possible.
