I am kind of surprised I haven't heard anyone mention this before. I have noticed that pets usually have less health than their masters, and while in some cases talents might caused it, I doubt every single hunter I encountered wasn't BM.
I played on Feenix for years, and back there, pets usually had more hp than their owners. The only situations where I saw a hunter have more hp than his pet was some very well geared hunter.
Is this the way it was on retail? Is it possible that pets on Feenix were bugged and had much more hp than they should have?

Feenix pets scaled like in 2.0
Here there is fixed stats on pets, they don't seem to benefit from buffs either. Otherwise their dps seems fine.

So does that mean that pets do not get stamina and attack power from hunters?

No, feenix was wrong in that. That's TBC.

What about armor? For example would a bear be better to level with because in theory it would have more armor so it would take less damage.

Yes, thats why in the good old days pets were grouped DPS vs Tanky vs PvP snare.
Pulling 1 mob at a time a high DPS pet should have no problems staying alive, unless the mob is orange/red.
If you happen to get 2 or more mobs attacking your pet then you will see the difference between using a dps and a tanky pet.
For simple leveling thou its just personal preference.
I love boars as they make cute grunty noises and the charge ability gets them to target quickly and provides a nice initial burst of threat.
