Can hunters be great dps if you do your 100% best?

I know that hunters are lower in the dps charts, but I've also seen some videos where vanilla hunters did pretty good dps (top 5). So what I want to know is if it's possible to be a good dps with the use of 100% buffs and consumables?

Can hunters ever come close to mages, locks, fwarrs and rogues? Honestly, I wouldn't mind all the farming for consumables if that meant I could be a good dps with my favorite class.

Really, every? What about shamans, druids? While people think of hunters as 2nd class dps, those 2 classes are even below that in terms of dps, I think.
