For times where threat needed extra attention or raid-wide damage, have your imp out. For fights where your pet didn't risk dying frequently and threat wasn't a huge issue, have the succy out for +10% all damage. If the fight was one where your pet would die a lot despite your best management, just sac succy for +15% (or VW in fights where you needed sustained dps and didn't want to tax the healer's mana healing your taps). And for resistance fights, nothing beats Felhunter, which allows you to squeeze in a few more dps pieces instead of pure resistance gear.

you neglected to mention the usefulness of the DS: Felhunter, which is actually better than DS: Voidwalker in raids where the healers are constrained; with this, not only do you not have to blow gcds on life tap more than not very many times, but you aren't overhealing yourself with DS:Voidwalker and the healers can more easily predict when you'll take damage(less life taps), and man it actually gives you alot of mana too

this here is a warlock spec that I would really like to try out some time... if only it would actually work

with improved scorch and +10% crit chance and CoE, I'd be doing alot of damage with searing pain spam and soulfire crits, which could break 3.5k in D2/ZG gear on debuffed bosses

It depends.....most people try to use the same gear for raiding and pvp, which means they tend to stack more stamina, which ultimately makes DS:VW a little better due to the better conversion percentage, and the healing is more universally useful IMO since it's effectively giving you health AND mana, where as FH only gives you mana.

Never work. Searing pain has a 400% increased threat penalty. It's meant to be used only in PVP or holding threat on bosses that require a Lock-tank.

Well, people tends to forget that in vanilla, there wasn't anyone with 7years+ theorycraft experience. Most of the locks were indeed SM/Ruin, elitists jerks was a small community, and it was tough to get some golds for respec.
Nowadays, everyone knows how to grind, how to calculate and speculate, how to farm, what does this boss and another, etc.

But to stay on the subject, in PvEHL, sac/ruin (succubus) has done his job since a long time. SM/Ruin is nice, but it depends on the situation. VW or FH sac isn't worth it. On some encounters it's nice, but you'll deal nothing. FH sac is pretty good for C'thun, but this will be a terrible DPS loss for the weakness phase.

P.S : Totally agree about the searing pain. It's just below the sac/ruin built in term of DPS efficiency, but the 400% threat make this absurd.

Moin

For PvE I usually run a DS/ruin build since 2005. It depends a bit on how the other warlocks in the raid are specced. You'll want at least 2 SM/ruin locks for the blood pact. If you're Horde and have to live without BoS, MD/ruin is also a viable choice if your tanks aren't that great.
For leveling I usually go with some kind of DP/FD build and succubus. The only time I summon a VW is for sacrificing when farming with DS. Can't stand the guy.
For PvP I'd use SL/SBurn. But I don't PvP with my warlock :).

€:
Honorable mention for a farmbuild (and BEAST dps in raid encounters where your DoTs can shine, like Noth) is SM/DS. It pretty much sucks for direct damage and clearly is no versatile raid build, but it's fun anyway :).

Just stumbled over this (April 24th 2007, early BC - very elaborated discussion of each lock talent), and since we have no lock section yet I´ll dump it here: http://www.ownedcore.com/forums/world-o ... -07-a.html

Some talents have changed, but good part is the same. I would, same as anyone here I guess, disagree on details but overall it made an interesting read.
