shadow bolt pulls threat faster then searing pain

shadow bolt pulls threat faster then searing pain

by brendanv » Mon Aug 10, 2015 9:51 pm

trying to see if im the only one seeing this. did some testing with some guildies, noticed shadow bolt pulling at or below 100% threat on ktm whereas searing pain took till ~140%. trying to get some feedback, balancing threat is starting to prove challenging

Shadow Bolt = 1 threat per damage
Searing Pain = 2 threat per damage

You can figure out the math yourself to include spell power and cast time.

Are you suggesting that searing pain is working as intended? I haven't done any conclusive tests, but I am skeptical that it is actually producing 2x threat per damage.

i knew that much. and reading the post, " If the other player is outside melee range, they need 130% of Xs threat to pull aggro." i thought i understood this as well (and the whole reason for this thread). why is it as soon as 100%, even sooner. shadow bolt pulls but sp doesnt, its not from a huge crit or anything, so its not like 90% spiking hard afterwards. reading the last post of that thread also leads me to believe im not the only one experiencing anomalies

The closest thing I've done to a test has been (while leveling) just spam searing pain on a mob with my voidwalker tanking just to see how long it would take to pull aggro, and irrc, it died before I pulled aggro. That doesn't seem right to me. I didn't record my level, the rank of torment, or the rank of searing pain, but it doesn't seem like torrent should ever out threat searing pain unless you're using an extremely low rank relative to the rank of torment.

After doing this, I began to use searing pain quite often, (as in lower levels searing pain does more dps than shadowbolt and is more mana efficient). I only pulled aggro from mobs when they were almost dead (and had dots ticking on them the whole time) and never pulled aggro from tanks in 5 mans.

I will add that I am an orc, so my pets do 5% more melee damage (and therefore slightly generate slightly more threat), but that still doesn't seem to add up.

Maybe I'll do a real test when I get around to it. And if it turns out it isn't working, I'll make a post on the bug tracker.

Voidwalker threat is a huge variable that means your test result is useless, at best. Voidwalker threat has not only been bugged twice since launch on this server alone, it's also very spiky and depends on a lot of things such as latency and a lot of other uncontrollable things which makes them useless for testing threat.

What you want to do is find something that does x amount of damage at a specific threat ratio, see how much damage you need to deal before pulling aggro with a bunch of different things, then calculate the difference between supposed numbers (theoretical) and real numbers (real), if the difference is large, post your findings on here and let us peer review it and then make a bug report.

A quick test:

Voidwalker's rank 6 suffering does 600 threat, according to http://db.vanillagaming.org/?spell=17752. This means that it should require 780 threat to pull agro from range (130%).

I put voidwalker on passive, have it cast suffering once and back to passive before it melee hits.

I cast searing pain for 289, 271, 287, and crit for 546 with the mob still attacking the voidwalker. 1393 total damage without getting agro.

I hit one more time for 274 damage. This finally pulls agro.

My theory is that maybe searing pain is doing 50% threat, because 1393/2=697, which is below the 780 threshold, while another 274/2=136 put me above the threshold to gain agro.

Second test, again with the voidwalker on passive and using suffering rank 6 once, a single shadow bolt of 754 pulls agro immediately even though I am at range and this should be below the 780 threshold of pulling agro.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this seems weird.

Searing Pain aggro is bugged like fuck. A SP spam of 4-5 times should result in an immediate agro change, I remember doing Scholo in 2006 with good tanks that could loose agro in 3 searing pains if I would chose to. But here on Nostalrius, there is no agro, you pull more agro with normal sb spam...
