Elemental Shaman PvE

I'm currently leveling my shaman (As elemental) and planning to play as Elemental in pvp and pve. I used to play elemental in retail vanilla and PvE was no problem, because I were playing in my friends guild. I usually were in top 15 dps (6-15) on 40-man raids even though i used to chuck loads of mana pots to be able to dps. However I'm now lvl 36 and hearing lots of trashtalk about elemental spec being completely useless.
So how does guilds react to elemental spec? I'm aware that in early 60s with bad gear it's not that strong, but I really want to do both pvp and pve with elemental as I used to back in the days.
