Mining: Worth it?

I'm a ENG/Miner, and have been since level 6. ENG is just too damn useful for a Pally to give it up, but Mining kinda sucks. There are so few nodes up when I go to mine, that I commonly walk away with less than a stack of ore.

I have Gatherer, but as I don't often find nodes, my database is QUITE underpopulated. Anyone know of any pre-populated Mining databases for Gather? Is Mining simply too overpopulated at the endgame to make it worthwhile? I have been thinking of dropping Mining for Chanting, and was going to make it happen this morning, until my first Rich Thorium Vein on Nost gave up a crystal. I already have a lowbie alt who I send greens to for D/Eing, but I am also hoping to sell chants with my 60 Pally for the purposes of establishing an income, which is quite difficult as a Gnomish Engineer/Miner when everything you make requires ENG, plus your gathering skill is so unreliable for cash.

What do you guys think?

P.S. As a Prot Pally, I am often on the losing end of Ganks; another reason why a gathering profession might not be best.

I am Enchant/Mining.

Love it, Arcane Crystals sell good, Enchanted Thorium Sells good. Regular Ore is descent to sell as well, but heavy competitors who LOVE to undercut you.
maybe have an alt that is just a Gatherer, and pick up Blacksmith or Enchanting if you want to ditch Mining.

Duki tipped me off to some great mining, but the competition was so insane that it just wasn't worth my time. I dumped Mining, and am now in the process of PLing Chanting, which I chose due to the fact that being an Alchie requires multiple 1k+ investments for recipes which established Alchies already have, but right now no Chanter has the ZG or AQ formulas, which puts me on a more even playing field. Besides, I love the whole service aspect of Chanting so much more than I enjoy mindlessly posting stuff to the AH.
