I'm really leaning to the 20/0/31 build, since I think the benefits from the Holy tree would be slightly better than that of the Protection tree, especially when you consider that in group PvP settings, there will likely be another Paladin with the Blessing of Kings talent.
I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts on this.
Personally I think there is ONE basic build for paladins, but I will post a few. I will also mention we have since made a thread about many talent specs called "Paladin specs galore"

Reckoning Paladin Starter - This is a 0/25/0 Basic Build. 1 into Redoubt so you can actually count the Reck stacks (ReckCounter is an addon instead).
Reckoning Ret Paladin PvP - This is a 0/25/26 Build.
Reckoning AoE Paladin PvP - This is a 0/25/26 Build. Gotta love AoE
The basic build is 11 Holy (for AoE)/8 Protection (For 3% hit)/32 Retribution. I feel 3 points into precision is better then 3 points into Vindication, becuase imo Vindication is a wasted debuff for PvP, while Hit is a must. 3 points that would of been used for Vindication was used for benediction leaving one point left overall to be used for another point into benediction. You want to save mana for using seals.
The rest of the builds are for "Reckoning" and I highly recommend them if you want to do massive one shot damage.
Shockadin is pretty simple to make.
let's get started:
Holy - Obvious choice for shockadin since the name comes from holy shock (31 talent in holy tree)
- 0/5 Divine Strength, 5/5 Divine intellect - Focus comes from Spell Damage so you need the 10% int, Str make your melee go up, but if you want Divine str, you should be doing ret build.
- 3/5 Spiritual Focus, 5/5 Improved Seal of Righteousness - Main judgements will be coming from this seal, so it's obvious you want it maxed out. 3/5 into the other since while healing will be important, it should not be a priority.
- 3/3 Healing Light, 1/1 Consecration, 0/2 Improved Lay on Hands, 2/2 Unyielding Faith - If your going to heal at all, you want the healing light maxed out so you get the most out of it. Consecration is obvious for the AOE, With Improved Lay on hands can be VERY useful, I feel for PvP it not something to be priority. Lastly 2/2 Unyielding Faith is useful even for 10%, however if you feel Spiritual focus is better suited, feel free to swop out the Talents.
- 5/5 Illumination, 0/2 Improved Wisdom - Illumination is a must have for the Holy Shock ability, Imp Wisdom is not a prio, you still can use wisdom, plus if you have a pvp healadin in your raid they already (most likely) have imp wisdom which eliminates your need to have it.
- 1/1 Divine Favor, 0/3 lasting judgements - Divine Favor, required for Holy Shock plus an awesome ability, Lasting Judgements are not a prio in pvp imo
- 5/5 Holy Power - 5% spell crit is needed for shockadins.
- 1/1 Holy Shock - The ability is 30 sec CD which is for Offense/Defense. Awesome Ability in PvP!
The last build is a personal favorite of a friend of mine who currently uses r13 gear (previous private server). Feel free to add your own opinions, comments, complaints, suggestions, just keep the trolling to a min plz.
