Returning to WoW After a Decade, and I Hear Paladins Suck?!?

by Kazarak » Mon Aug 31, 2015 2:11 pm

Hi everyone! So I've been playing on Project 1999 for a few years to keep my MMO skills honed. A week or so ago, I heard about this server and decided to give it a try. I'm still fiddling around with alts, but I'm considering playing my Paladin as my main.

As background, I played WoW quite a bit in Vanilla, but lost interest quickly once BC came out and rendered all my 1337 PvP gear obsolete. I remember Paladins being a holy terror in PvP! (See what I did there? ) There was many a time in Alterec Valley where a lone Paladin would point at one of our Mages or Shamans - I was Horde in Live... - yell, "You!", bubble and come in swinging. Twenty or thirty Horde players would say, "SHIT!!!" and be helpless as said Paladin turned his target into a corpse before dying in turn. Truly a noble death...

I even leveled an alt up to 40 or so way back when and I was shocked at the situations I could get into and live. I was straight out of EQ at the time, so my ideas on what I could and couldn't do in an MMO with a toon were a bit skewed.

So anyways, I hear Paladin DPS sucks, they're only good for heals in end-game content, no one wants them for pre-made PvP groups, they make squishy tanks, and leveling takes forever. Really? Either I'm not remembering things correctly, this ain't Vanilla, or people aren't doing something right! I'm open to any of the above options. I realize my memory isn't what it used to be...

Admittedly, I've only raided in WoW a couple of times as a Tauren Hunter - as I hated raiding from EQ - but the rest of it seems to differ from what I remember. So I can't speak for the end game content with personal experience. As for the rest:

Low DPS: Of course Paladins won't have as high as a Rogue or Hunter with all the other cool toys Paladins have. I would think they have plenty enough to level and pull their weight in groups.

Leveling: Not dying anywhere near as often means less CR's and buffing and more killing. That alone should mitigate a lot of the lower DPS issues.

PvP: With the ability to not die, remove snares, heal, stun, bubble, and still throw out decent DPS, I don't see why they would be frowned upon in pre-mades.

Tanking: Plate mail, healing, stuns, adequate DPS, bubbling... Sounds good to me.

Again, I fully admit to only actually playing a Paladin to level 40 or so on Live, so my first-hand experience is limited and foggy from the years. So where is my logic going wrong here?

Paladins are the best DPS when they have 5 reckoning

and the best healers ofc.

Low DPS: Ret is pretty low until AQ gear (or R10/R13 PvP sets once their stats are updated). The problem with Ret DPS is that it requires AP and SP, which just plain doesn't exist until AQ.

Leveling: Only having auto-attacks makes us the second slowest levelers period. Better than Warriors since we have Seal of the Crusader to reduce our gear dependence.

PvP: Whoever told you Paladins are bad and not desired in premades might have mental issues. Holy is by miles the best PvP healing spec, and Blessing of Freedom alone makes any Paladin extremely desirable for any premade.

Tanking: Paladins are the best dungeon tanks thanks to extremely easy threat management. However, we have no taunts, so we can't tank bosses in raids. Never heal yourself while tanking, you lose your mitigation while casting. Never bubble while tanking, you will kill your group members.

"Man please don't share wrong information to this person.
I have tanked all raid bosses in vanilla that exist as Paladin Tank".

p.s Ret can do extremely high dps especially on trash we are major leaders , but you have to focus on "d1,d2,t2,pvp" sets , LBRS/DMF Trinket , Eye of Ragnaros , Melee hit cap fingers/cloak/neck, on current Patch.

Intellect allows you to use max rank judges/consecrations for lot dps and you have Supreme Flask + Many Consumes to increase enormous dps during Raids.
We also have amazing Seal of Command that is great on our Maintarget DPS.

Thus our sets still gives "str and agi" which is our lead Stats together with "non existant yet SP" that still exist in consumes .

Feel free to take a look at my ret theorycraft thread, smilk. And please don't get the hopes of a new player up by telling them they can tank raids when no guild worth their salt would even consider using a paladin as a tank, not even an off tank.

How about Judgement? Can't you rotate Seal of the Cruader with Seal of Justice, use Judgement, and then re-SotC? What else are you going to use you mana for? ;)

I was hoping that Paladins got something else to click for extra DPS...

Glad to hear about PvP. I hates me some rogues...

Judge of Crusade - Seal of Command and judges of command max rank on cd, Consecration max rank , Hammer of Wraith when execute , Exorcism and Holy Wraith when Undeads .

We have lot of things to do. That we are able to do tons of dps.

My Paladin toon is only level 13 on this server right now, so I don't have many of the toys yet...

Start your 11 Points on Holy Tree to get Consecration.

Once you have 11 points on that you choose which spec you want to be (ret for dps or prot for tank or holy for heal) .

;)

p.s you still have mini rotation for 1 target - judge of crusade - seal of righteous and judges . + consecration if you get that 11 points in near future.

exorcism ;)

I'm kind of confused by one person saying we have nothing but auto-attack and another saying we have lots of attacks. It's sounding like there are quite a few things in the rotation once all the toys become available.
