AoE tanking - Nostalrius Edition!

AoE tanking - Nostalrius Edition!

by Theloras » Tue Oct 06, 2015 10:54 pm

I just joined Entitled last week and am currently in their Euro raid group (I can't raid NA evening times otherwise my wife will cut my calls off) and we cleared up to and including Firemaw (I missed this fight as I had to leave after the gauntlet) this morning on our first time venturing into BWL as a raid group. We had 3 wipes on Razorgore at the start but we got er done on the 4th attempt and then quickly knocked down Vaelstraz.

While I had been healing up to this point (after helping AoE tank on the first Razorgore attempt), I switched to full AoE Tank mode for the gauntlet and Broodlord fight which you can see from the screenshots below (had 1 wipe on Broodlord at 10%):

Obviously, my DPS and threat would have been much higher if I had Force Reactive Disk, but even without it we can still AoE tank like a mofo:

KEEP CALM and AOE TANK LIKE A BOSS :)

Perfect time to show that Trolls who is AoE Boss!!

Don't forget that your threats would been much higher if you used Improved Righteous Fury ;) or you used there?

Man your Consecration Tick way much higher without Spell damage than my Consecration with 100 Spell damage in Peenix.

Imagine if you used extra Supreme Flask and Greater Arcane Elixir with Wizard Oil :) .

That was rank 5 Consecration IIRC and rank 1 was ticking for like 77 I think with full buffs and Seal of the Crusader active.

Rank 1 does more than enough AoE dmg/threat to maintain all of the adds - I only drop rank 5 when an entire wave/pack of whelps would come and needed to be dropped quickly.

Another day, another MC clear and 4 bosses down in BWL for Entitled after the raid id reset overnight.

Today however, the WoW Gods smiled kindly upon me as Ragnaros dropped the 2nd best AoE tanking item in the game after Force Reactive Disk:

Essence of the Pure Flame
Binds when picked up
Unique
Trinket
Requires Level 60
Equip: When struck in combat inflicts 13 Fire damage to the attacker.
http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=18815

Now I know a lot of people openly scoff at this item but when it comes to AoE tanking, it is simply irreplaceable as you can see in the screen shots below from our clear of the BWL Gauntlet:

http://imageshack.com/a/img905/9381/7SfLB1.jpg
http://imageshack.com/a/img631/6836/O13Wmk.jpg

All that juicy white + yellow damage is wonderful to see :)

PS Don't forget about picking up this gem of an item as well from Mekgineer Thermaplugg in Gnomeregon - while you have to put the helmet on to activate the buff, you can put your tanking helmet back on afterwards and still maintain the reflective dmg aura seeing as it lasts for 10 mins with a 30 min cd:

Electromagnetic Gigaflux Reactivator
Binds when picked up
Head Cloth
44 Armor
+12 Spirit
+15 Intellect
Durability 50 / 50
Requires Level 32
Use: Channels a bolt of lightning and hurls it towards all enemies in front of the caster causing 147 to 168 Nature damage. The caster is then surrounded by a barrier of electricity for 10 min. (cooldown 30 min)
http://db.vanillagaming.org/?item=9492

Static Barrier
30 yd range
Instant
Surrounds the caster with a shield of lightning that lasts 10 min and inflicts 5 Nature damage to melee attackers.

I'm the imp (MC) and whelp (BWL) tank for our guild since it's something that a paladin simply tanks best. I just have some good dungeon tanking gear with Force Reactive Disk, no luck with the Essence of Pure Flame yet. But you could just as easily do the job in something like full tier 1 as long as you have enough armour and stamina (fire resist helps for the imps).

The threat really is something different. On several occasions I've had Salvation rebuffed on me and forgot to remove it and still held aggro easily. The down side of Force Reactive Disk is the fact that it breaks. And it breaks fast. After two MC imp packs it's usually at 85-90/120 durability and it can only withstand one quick clear through suppression room. If we wipe there I'll just switch to my other shield.

Other than that I'm full healing duty and currently running this spec mainly for Blessing of Sanctuary but also for the off-tanking duty

I've tanked some dungeons with this but mana and having no taunts nor damage reduction skills make it pure agony.

When I tank 5/10 mans, I use BoWisdom and Seal of the Crusader + rank 1 Consecration as I AoE tank and I never have agro issues.

On a boss, I judge Wisdom as well for extra mana regen so I can use rank 5 Consecration :)

it is not hard at all on 5 man.

keep sanctuary / retri aura and the gear/build you use.

Use Seal / Judge of Wisdom on main target and spam aoe free ;) .

i agree with this build surviving is agony in dungeons.

Dungeons are totally doable - didn't mean to say they weren't. What I meant was that the tools are lackluster compared to those of a warrior and druid tank.

SoCr and Consecrate (even rank1) do quite nice threat but outside of that there are very little you can do. If the first shadow bolt crits for 3k the mob will run to the lock, is no longer in consecrate and you have no taunt. You could try to judge righteousness for some extra aggro but that mana is better used for higher rank consecrate in the first place. And if you're doing both - that's more than third of your mana pool every 8-10 seconds.

Some monsters, in DM:W for example, also mana burn.

Also without shield block, defensive stance, last stand and shield wall your defenses will be worse than a warriors. It also doesn't help that gearing wise you'll be left with dungeon blues and a few off-set pieces. Well, at least never being crit immune will have the upside of benefiting from Redoubt a little.

IT IS DOABLE, some will find it fun even, but you could also be tanking Onyxia with a shadow priest - that's also doable.

Now AOE tanking whelps - that's where it's at boys.

If the first shadow bolt crits for 3k the mob will run to the lock,

Judgement of righteousness with 1 melee swing and consecration solve that issue within 1 second (like taunt).

You could try to judge righteousness for some extra aggro but that mana is better used for higher rank consecrate in the first place

Mana is not an issue at all even with Max Rank Consecration. It depend on the Player Management.

Also without shield block, defensive stance, last stand and shield wall your defenses will be worse than a warriors.

We have other versions for this CD's which are still superior. Who care about this CD's on AoE ?!.

Some monsters, in DM:W for example, also mana burn.

I have already mention : Seal/Judge of Wisdom = Infinite Mana and Extreme Regeneration.

IT IS DOABLE, some will find it fun even, but you could also be tanking Onyxia with a shadow priest - that's also doable.

I didn't got your goal about this . Ofc it is doable since we can Tank all Bosses that Exist in Game.

The Topic is not what is doable or not , the Topic is AoE Tanking which shows that we skyrock on it.

About your 5 Mans statements:

Have Fun <3

"Don't forget that this Build you show is for experimental Fun and AoE" nothing with some viable spec.
