Nostalrius Begins - Quality wow vanilla realm (1.12)

So my Paladin has been rocking the Chausses of Westfall (173 Armor, +11 Strength, +5 Stamina) from DM. Last night I got Dual Reinforced Leggings (391 Armor, +7 Defense) from Gnomer. The additional armor of the new leggings reduces my damage taken by 3.9% but drops my DPS by 1.7 and my health by 50. In and of itself, that seems like a raw deal. So how does the +7 Defense affect things? I assume it raises my effective level for enemies attacking me by 1.4 levels? Is that a noticeable defensive boon?

until you hit 50+ you never care about defense . all you go is armor and stamina (str as 3rd) .
