Final Say - March 2016 - Tankadin in Raids?

by MoogleKingKupo » Mon Mar 21, 2016 2:51 am

I've had some conversations here and there with many different players on the server (PvE) and the question has led to a lot of "preferred" but nothing set in stone. I am just trying to get a feel for what I should expect at level 60 as a Paladin.

Can a Paladin tank raids?

Are guilds just being "max-min" about things or is it truly impossible for a Paladin tank to handle end game bosses?

Thanks for your time and explanations, I like healing at max level, but I do want to tank since that's what appeals to me most. So, if I need to fire up a Warrior then I'd like to get started sooner rather than later!

I got a feeling that I know where this thread will lead to...

Anyways BTT:

- You're capable of handling end game bosses.
- Guilds will prefer warriors as their maintanks. Especially min-maxing-raids.
- Some guilds like to have a paladin-tank for special jobs.
- Most important thing is that you enjoy your game.

Thanks for the response. A quick follow up; So I should not be expecting guild to be *looking* for a Paladin tank but will instead have to continually strive to position myself as one? At least now I know that it's viable statistically/gear-wise for the Paladin and will just require a more adaptable raiding group...are there many willing to do so?

Keep in mind, port paladin tanking isn't just any player who is port, it's a player dedicated to their role much more then any other role. It's not easy being a tankadin.

What JC said.

You also need a thick skin to deal with the "lolprot" crowd. If I should write about all the times a pug raid I was in failed, and one drunk or high idiot felt that fact alone was proof of his right to lecture me on "holy or gtfo," I ought to fill folio volumes...

...well, maybe not THAT many, but any fool can tear down, condemn, and criticize, and on this server, most fools do.

In all the ads I've read while playing Nostalrius, I've not seen once one asking for a protection paladin,no. I've seen unorthodox stuff going for priests, shadow, and one guild that was recruiting disc/smiter dps. I think I also saw one time someone who wanted a feral druid dps. That's about it. Most guilds raid with warrior tanks and that's it.

if you want the best vanilla wow tanking experience, its prot warrior

guilds wont be looking for prot paladins - best to use the ol' charisma and worm your way in
squishiest tank out of the 3 - so you wont be tanking bosses, except for funsies
not required, very possible for a warrior to aoe tank imps in mc and suppression room/nef skeletons
cant taunt
cant agressively sustain maximum threat output
holy paladins in tank set does the job, and is useful for the other 95% of the raid - you dont need holy shield, sanc, or even improved righteous fury to tank the few aoe pulls where pallies shine

1/2 the fun of being a prot paladin is to go against the grain, but the reality is the spec got a much needed buff in TBC for a reason....

I personally plan to have one hybrid pally (20/31/0), tank a few aoe pulls while healing most of the bosses. Getting a core tank spot as a warrior can be tough, and paladins have it way worse due to the limited number of times where they outshine warriors in raids. People who think pally tanks are completely useless in raids are just biased against pally tanks, but 9 times out of 10, a prot warrior is the better option as a tank for raids.

In my opinion, healer/tank hybrid is much better done doing 31/20/0 instead of 20/31/0. The 5th/6th tier of protection is really weak, and the core tanking talents are in the first 3 tiers eitherway. Holy Power + Holy Shock have use both in healing as well as tanking, whereas 31 prot gives you only Holy Shield, tank-only function, while preventing you from getting the guaranteed crit (free) heal every 2 minutes.
