I don't think that he was really all that off topic. The topic is about a good leveling spec, and to my understanding, he was saying that when leveling on a pvp server, it is prudent to spec shatter. If anything, the raid spec that he was attacking is off topic, since the OP was asking about about a leveling spec and not a post-60 spec.
In any case, I agree that it's a wise move to spec shatter while leveling on this server. Do you *need* shatter to win in pvp? Not necessarily. You also don't necessarily *need* to wear gear to successfully pvp people as a mage, but it's still recommended.
Even if this was a pve server, I'd still spec shatter. Prior to level 60, shatter is infinitely more useful than Winter's Chill, so why would you need Winter's Chill in a leveling spec? Even at level 60 it might be wasted talent points, because only one mage per raid needs that talent.
I'll keep it short and simple.
You can level up with the raiding spec as is and it's very efficient, is there any reason to do so? Dunno. Is there any reason not to? No.
I also enjoy Shatter but it's not something you can't live with, if you want shatter you just get another spec from those I suggested, thus there is no point over talking about it.
I don't know why you had to bring that up but here. I wont argue that shatter is less useful over WS in most cases, but like I said on the above comment, if you don't like it play something else. But at 60 there are man guilds and whatnot that run 2 Deep Frost Mages with WS and 3 Arc/Fr Mages, which is the ideal setup until Naxx usually.
I really don't see what's the arguing about, I suggested 3 specs, a guy didn't like 1, we moved on. Each one got his own playstyle, some people don't enjoy questing and want to farm from 16 to 60, some people don't enjoy farming and they quest to 60, some others freeze their exp every week to do some more PvP etc. I'm on the farming side and I express my opinions from that standpoint, if you don't like it keep scrolling and move with your day, I never said I'm the all-known #1 mage.
