Resists in PvP

Resists in PvP

I remember the struggle leveling my shadow priest back in the day and always dealing with higher level alliance(beating most). I'm playing a mage and It seems like it's impossible on this server because if someone is just 2 or 3 levels higher I get resisted so much that the vanilla mana pool just can't handle that. If someone 5+ levels attacks me I basically just accept my fate because I can't land a spell for my life. I played retail vanilla all the way through BC and it was never this bad, sure you'd get a resist here or there, but I get resisted like 5 times in a row or more.

I tried sheeping a Skull(seemed to be 60) rogue and could not after a full mana bar. This is clearly not working as intended because higher level's already have a gear and stat bonus vs lower levels. Now we must also deal with ridiculous resist rates that just didn't exist on classic. A player just 5 levels higher is godly and impossible to kill, while I remember killing skulls on many occasions (with help) back then. My shaman friend and I could not kill a player just 10 levels higher because of insane resists.

I also have the talents for lowering all enemy resistance by 10 and the 6% chance to hit with frost/fire spells. I doubt anyone is running around with anything past their race resistance which are normally just 10. So I am hitting most targets at -10 resistance and a bonus 6% should not mean a 75% resist rate on someone 5-10 levels higher.... This is not PVE but it feels like it.

Don't say it's classic because I played classic and yes it was hard but I could kill higher levels if I was more skilled, While on this server you cannot.

've seen a number of threads recently on the boards pertaining to +spell hit chance and I've gathered some information for you which I hope will dispel some of the confusion. Please feel free to post your comments in a reply to this thread.

+1% spell hit chance increases the base chance for a spell to land against a target by 1%

If your target is the same level as you, a spell has a base chance to hit of 96%.

If the target is +1 level compared to you: 95%

+2 levels: 94%

+3 levels: 83% if the target is a mob, 87% if the target is a player.

+4 levels: mob: 72% player: 80%

+5 levels: mob: 61% player: 73%

Etc...

If you wear a +1% spell hit chance item, the above percentages will increase by 1. +2% gives +2.

Etc...

Source : Blizzard

In your example, a player 10 levels above you gives you a chance to hit of 38%, 44% after your +6 talent. For binary spells, you can add on top of that the Resist the target may have.

At level 60 the old T1 sets actually have quite a lot of +resist tossed onto them ; before that players should indeed sit a +0-20 resist, maybe a bit more with the Druid buff.

It's still quite a bit when attacked by a level 50 casters (just having 10-20 +resist as a 60 means 4-6% increased miss chance for a level 50 caster for binary spells for instance).

So if the server is using Blizzard formula, there's no reason for PvP miss chance to be broken.

However you're not the only one to "feel" like you're missing a lot, and I myself got a partial resist on a spell cast on me by a player who was a few levels lower than me the other day, despite having absolutely 0 +SR (it was a Shadow Bolt).

So there might be a problem around that, you can check my report here https://report.nostalrius.org/plugins/tracker/?aid=452

As a leveling player I'm dealing with alliance at a consistent bases, if they are my level or lower(quite rare) then everything seems fine. Then you add a few levels to that and now I'm getting key spells like frost nova resisted every time.... this cannot happen to a mage as it normally means death. Also no one has resistances lol... why does that keep getting put out there? Unless your in Tier1-2 which normally has fire resistance (frost spec) then sure I could see this happening, but we are talking about players who are still in leveling gear and we all know there are no resistances(very rare) on armor.

Even with Mark of the wild buff players are only looking at max +15 resists(at max level), while at lower levels it is normally less. I just can't fathom how everything else on this server is so great yet the pvp is so bad when leveling up. Getting 60 will solve my problem but I wonder how many people have and will quit because of how unbalanced resists are.... It's quite frustrating getting resisted 5+ times in a row vs someone 5 levels higher... just shouldn't happen.

again skull rogue is ganking people in splintertree post and I unloaded my hole mana before he finally finished killing all the lowlevels and killed me. Basically resisted sheep and like 15 frost spells.... no chance that even 50 level 25 mages could kill 1 60 with spells which is not vanilla....

how does say, 20 resist affect spell hit as a 60 vs a 60? and does it stack linearly? hard to find info about this

i dont know if resist talents are working.
i have -10 res on my target, and +10% hit chance. (im arcane)
i still often get resists from 2-3 levels lower mobs and players.

I also feel that something is probably wrong with the resist mechanics. Vanilla was a long time ago, so I may just be remembering it wrong, but I don't recall getting resisted nearly as bad back then. I too have noted that it is utterly pointless to try to fight somebody more than 3 levels above me, because I basically can't hit them at all beyond that point, even with speccing into talents that are supposed to help me hit them.

Even if I'm wrong, and this actually is Blizzlike, it's still pretty stupid. Higher level people already have better stats/skills/spells/gear/ect, so why would they also need an artificial advantage such as me being completely unable to hit them?

They are, you just have to reroll melee! Every lvl 1 melee hits you (lvl 60) 9 out of 10!
