Mage talent build

Hey folks,

I've always played frost mage and I will again. But lets discuss the talent builds.
This is what I always used to play with: http://www.wowprovider.com/Old.aspx?talent=11215875_8_8c525020102w5353203100251301

It provides me good DPS damage all the time (so without any CD spells). I love this build in pvp as I can dps fast and have the CC spell available. In PVE I'm also a fast killer with the crit chance on frozen targets.

How does your build look like and why?

Mage is my favorite class, and I intend to play again as one. Frost mage is great for leveling and for some instances like MC. I found a post on another private server on how to play a mage on some parts of the game so here is the link. I found it very useful, maybe some of you will also.

P.S. Sorry for posting a link from another server, it wasn't my plan to advertise another server but the guide is very useful.

Yo

My frost templates :
(comments depend on your gear)

-pvp control/survival (also used for 5 man as a poor pvpboy) : http://www.wowprovider.com/?talent=1121 ... 3102051301
with this you can go in the fight, be sure to refresh ice barrier as soon as you can

-pvp asshole : http://www.wowprovider.com/?talent=1121 ... 23201e315s
stay max range, try to never be alone

-pvp frost, full stamina : http://www.wowprovider.com/?talent=1121 ... 3102051300
I enjoy to use this as well, but only when i'm full r10, double constitution legs/head, r3 cloak, r4 neck, r5 wrist...

-pve frost 5 men (if I dont know the tank and i dont check my threat): http://www.wowprovider.com/?talent=1121 ... 3102351301
you can do what you want and let the tank tryhard

-pve frost sweet thread, winter's chill => spam frost : http://www.wowprovider.com/?talent=1121 ... 3102301051

-pve frost Molten Core (fu witer's chill, there are other mages): http://www.wowprovider.com/?talent=1121 ... 535d30013f

Obviously your templates must be adapted to your gameplay, your gear and your bank account (switch pve pvp)

Any reason as to why you don't spec Improved Blizzard in PvP Nyarko? It's one of the best, if not the best, ability for peeling. The only way to get out of the Imp. Blizzard slow is to either have a free action potion popped beforehand or to receive Blessing of Freedom.

It's also one of the most powerful spells in 5man PvE, and in Zul'Gurub as well. Unless there is more than 1 caster mob in a pack you can just AoE down everything as if it were WotLK.

It's a pretty good talent, but it consumes a lot of mana. That's what me holding back from it.

Permafrost or Improved blizzard => I take permafrost so far

Since I have to do this choice, i never played with blizzard at all, except rank 1 to spot the rogues.
The last rank is so expensive (1300 mana when you have in average 5000 mana)

But I think it's possible to play with improved blizzard in pvp, it's just a matter of gameplay. I prefer being in the fight (nova CoC AExp) than max range and blizzard.
Cone of Cold (600 mana) with Permafrost is as much annoying as blizzard and when it's done on a frozen target it's much more efficient (dmg)
And in overall permafrost bring you more kite possibilities when you are engaged by a rogue/war/feral

Concerning the pve (I can be wrong but it's my pov), for the same manacost I just prefer to cast 5 frostbolt with 5 chances to crit and the possibility to move between 2 cast than 1 blizzard channel.
Furthermore the spellpower profitability is better on frostbolt than blizzard.

The only situation i do blizzard is on Flame Imps packs in MC =)

(and some gold farming spots...)

edit : didnt mention about the risk of counterpsells, stuns, fears, pushbacks etc... bye bye your 1k3 mana after 1sec channeling

First off, I wouldn't swap Permafrost for Improved Blizzard, I generally take both. Something along the lines of http://www.wowprovider.com/?talent=1121 ... 33132051c1

I'm looking at this from a peeling/CC perspective, because when I play a Mage in PvP it's never the damage that concerns me. Even a green geared Mage can be more useful than most other classes if played well.
For this reason I practically never use max rank Blizzard in PvP, the rank one slows just as much and has a very low mana cost (272 mana).

This goes for Cone of Cold as well, to some extend, as when peeling I'll utilize the rank 1 to preserve mana. I only use the max rank if I want to burst down a target attacking me.

I would have given you a great example of a mage using Blizzard to CC the opposing team to great effect, but it appears to have been deleted from youtube.

Regarding PvE, you have to realise that with 3+ targets, the chance for Blizzard to proc clearcasting increases dramatically. Even if your manapool itself would be so low that it would not allow a max rank Blizzard, you can always start out with a rank 1 Blizzard and then swap to full rank 1 or 2 ticks later when the clearcasting procs.
