cannot forward port

I am terribly.. terribly... terribly...
Confused with this port forwarding thing.
I was playing on the server for the first time yesterday, and I came across a problem.
I wasn't able to chat in-game, so I looked on forums and saw in one of the locked posts that this could be due to my routers firewall. So it told me to forward the port.
The forums post told me what ports to forward.
So I went to my routers firewall settings and tried to forward that port.
It said if I am trying to run that device on my computer i had to enter my ip when forwarding the port. I did.
It said 'Server IP isn't in LAN IP address subnet'
I'm up to my knee's in bullshit IRL and I really just want to sit down and play the damn game.
I'm 21 years old and i'm seriously at the point of crying out of anger and frustration and how ridiculously difficult it is just to play this game without having some dumb ass PORT FORWARDING bullshit I have to do.
I would really appreciate it if someone could maybe tell me why I can't forward the ports the forums told me to.
Or perhaps tell me that there is a simpler way of fixing the problem I have.
