Not sure whether to keep playing... (stability issue)

by BeastNips » Wed Dec 16, 2015 10:28 am

I'm the classic tale of "loved vanilla. Quite liked TBC. Didn't like WOTLK and stopped playing." Because of this I loved the idea of Nostalrius. I'd heard these things existed (private vanilla servers) but I didn't realise any had a high enough population and good enough scripting/design to make it actually like vanilla WoW.

The issue I'm having is what makes it good: the population. Most of the time I get massive lag spikes, when I don't I still have little hiccups like my casting bar jumping and what not. The view distance thing makes finding mobs for quests really difficult and if you add this to a high-lag period, you can be right on top of a mob before it appears (same with other players). The final issue is the obvious: too many players levling together.

What I'd like to know is if there are any plans to solve these problems? Playing the PvE server is not an option for me as world PvP is my favourite part of the game. At the moment I'm playing Kronos instead as it's far more stable (so far) and less laggy/jumpy, but the low population of that server really worries me, however it seems like the lesser of two evils since Blizzard won't offer a vanilla server.

Any thoughts?

Well if people bothered like you played on Kronos it would have a bigger pop and we would have less lagspikes here :D and in advance , another pvp server wont happen

It's a catch 22 really: more people leave Nost, stability improves but the population drops; more people play Kronos the population goes up but the stability could go down. I'm sure there is a happy medium with a decent population and stable enough game-play, but Nost quite clearly isn't that at the moment. If they did split the server (obviously voluntarily) we'd be a step closer to that happy medium, and I'd be quite happy to donate towards that goal.

In an ideal world Blizzard would just make a few vanilla servers and let me give them my money! Demand is there, just no supply.

On a side note: Kronos' population isn't as bad as I expected so I think I'll stick with that, but I'd come back to Nost in a second and donate if they made a new PvP server that was slightly more optimised.

Split the server then what? Reset the progress?
If most people stay on the PvP (because there is no transfers available) will one serve be dead?
I think its risky for Nost to ''split'' the PvP server like you said
PvE new server is fresh not long ago with i think around 3k pop peak which is pretty nice already

That's what I meant by "obviously voluntarily"; players would choose. If there was a newer server they would have to offer free transfers which would be an ideal solution. In the beginners guide new players could be heavily persuaded to move towards the lower population server. I'd bet on hundreds of players voluntarily transferring for increased stability.

With 8k players at peak times I don't think you have much of a risk as long as their are transfers available from the old server to the new server.

They've should've done 2 pvp servers instead of an additional pve server sinse there's clearly more demand for it.

E: Ofcourse this is their project and free for the audience so "should" is a wrong word here. Nevertheless worth mentioning.

Unless ofcourse there is a way to fix the lag problem in another way. I actually like the high population; more world pvp and not having to fight the same team in BG all the time.

Yeah I'd totally agree but then I ask myself how many people you'd actually need for that? I think it would be far fewer than 7-8k people. I'm only a little way into Kronos so far and I'm regularly bumping into people; Kronos has a mere fraction of Nosts population. If Nost was split there would be more than enough people for it to be a fun server. You could probably split it into three but we'll stick with two for now :)

I live in finland and 7k players still works ok. I don't know about other people. I start to experience some serious latency issues around 8k.

E: 9k players online at the moment. The weird thing is some spells are cast without any latency at all and some spells are cast with 2 sec latency. Can anyone who understands more about this help? If it could be fixed on my end. I have a friend in finland who says he only starts to experience lag at 10k players online.
