Stuck on "connecting"

So my friend downloaded the client and set his realmlist also deleteing WTF/ WDB files and when he goes to log in he gets...
"connecting..."

and then "disconnected from server"

he is running windows XP and nothing is wrong with his internet as skype and other games are working perfectly.

any ideas on what he can try
