I received a response from a GM today: "sadly we do not restore anything except from a few epic items in case of a server rollback."
Please guys there is nothing you can do? A level 57 Broken Tooth doesn't count as an epic item?? It is the hardest possible pet to tame, it is the undisputed best pet in pvp and pve, and it takes weeks to level it from 37 to 57. It's more on par with Thunderfury for hunters.
Also, it isn't like I just received it in a BWL drop before the crash, I've had this pet for months and invested time into it. I have screen shots of it when I'm at various levels up to 60. It's not my fault that the server data got messed up, I didn't do anything to cause this.
What does it say when I consider taming a new Broken Tooth (if I am lucky enough), and putting in weeks of time to level it, but then I realize the same thing could happen again with no warning whatsoever? So I think that it's not worth it. It means that I don't even want to tame a good pet. It means that hunters can't play their class. Hunters can only tame disposable lvl 60 pets. And I saw other reports here from hunters with the same problem.
On retail a pet would never randomly vanish, it only happens on a private server, and the main benefit of a private server is that one can author things and spawn a new pet for someone if the situation is dire. Would it really take more than 1 minute to spawn a pet, or roll me back 3+ days to when I had the pet, or any other practical solution? So what this says to me is that you're either too busy, or if I may say so, some have lost track of the original intention of creating a vanilla server?
As I said before, I would rather someone had vendored all of my gear. It makes me want to hang up the gloves. I apologize for sounding negative or critical. Truthfully, it would make me very happy if someone took the time to help. Thanks.
