Unable to tame

Hello!

I just tamed my first pet (After the hunter taming quest) an Elder Nightsaber. I didn't feed it and by the time I got to Darn and found the Hunter trainer, it vanished. Completely. I didn't mind re-taming one, until I found out, I can't. It simply won't let me.

then complete all the lvl 10 hunter quests, including the last one that teaches you how to feed your pet, before taming your permanent new best friend. The hunter sub-forums have plenty of more information and guidance:
