A Macbook shouldn't overheat, Apple over-regulates temperature. By overheat do you mean fps significantly drops? Or the comp shuts down?
I had overheating problems (major fps loss and stuttering) on my rMBP and it turned out the discreet graphics card was broken, it was under warranty and the Apple store repaired it. As others have suggested, maybe try clearing out dust. If it doesn't work you can install Macs Fan Control and set the fan to go to full blast at a lower temperature, which is generally a good idea for gaming anyway. I do that with many games, I find that I don't need to with vanilla.
