Reset my chat cache and now constant DC after login

by 7A65726F » Wed Mar 09, 2016 6:44 am

Game was running fine with no problems, although I had accidentally left General chat and tried to rejoin it using /join 1. Afterward, I was unable to /join General and i couldn't use any of the leave commands to get out of the channel named "1". I checked online for instructions on how to reset chat settings to default, which I did so by deleting ../wtf/account/accountname/charactername/chat_cache.txt
I logged in again and my joined chat channels were back to the default. Then after a delay of a few seconds, I got a "disconnected from server" message. Every subsequent login gave me the same message after anywhere from 5-20 seconds after the game was loaded. It happens on each of my characters on the PvP server, regardless of addons enabled or disabled, and regardless of the WTF/WDB folders being deleted for the client to rebuild them. I've followed all the steps and suggestions in the pinned topics in the Support subforum for connection issues, but no fix yet.

However, a character on the test server works just fine even with addons enabled. Have I been flagged for something suspicious on the PvP server because of trying to /join chat channels repeatedly and it not working? That's my suspicion, but I'd think I would have gotten a ban if the server flagged me for suspicious behaviour.

Edit: My character I started getting this bug on is Lightcradled, on the PvP server.

Try running it in administrator, if that doesnt work maybe try a complete reinstall.

Your best pet is to try to re-install the game completely if you can considering that you've tried all of the other options available to you.

Since I can connect to the other realms fine with no problems and deleting my WTF folder or removing my addons doesn't have an effect on it, my install should not be an issue (although I might reinstall anyway). After letting it sit for hours, I'm still having the issue. Or, it seemed that the issue was still there - looks like the server crashed shortly after I logged on a minute ago.

Edit: After server came back up, problem is still there. Can a GM/dev see if my client is getting forcibly disconnected because of something it's doing? Like did it actually mess something up when I deleted that txt file? I am hesitant believe that's affected something critical.

Things work in mysteries ways. I'm sure they'll reply to the thread when they get a chance.

Until then I honestly would try to re-install and see if that fixes the issue as that's all you really can do as you wait.

Reinstall the client to make sure nothing got accidentally modified with the default chat files (not in WTF, but the actual game files). The server does an MD5 hash check on all files to make sure they aren't modified. If your system modified one and repackaged the file, it would have a different hash and cause the server to DC you.

Try deliberately writing your password wrong once and see if you get a different error message. If you do, then try again with your correct one. Report back if this worked.

No, sadly the same thing occurred - character loaded, I walked around for about 15 seconds and then got disconnected with the same generic disconnect message.

I made a fresh install and it tested out just fine, then in comparing the two installs I discovered the problem - there was a file that didn't fit the nomenclature of the data folder - v.MPQ. Somehow I renamed that file and I guess the server didn't like my client not having the file (since I bet it thought the file was just gone since the name didn't match). I corrected it and it's working fine now! So, mystery and problem solved. Thanks for the responses, everyone!
