This was perfectly legal on retail, I remember because it happened to a friend and the GM simply said that he was the one who accepted the COD so there was nothing they could do about it.

It's a lesson learned, a few gold is not a big deal.

Here's some proof as well...

When I played retail. There were multiple "CoD scammers" on my server that had gotten banned specifically for scamming this way through the game. As their Terms change very often, now /any/ attempt to scam a player is deemed an offense and has the ability to have serious action taken against the player who scammed.

Can also google "Terms of Use" for World of Warcraft(Blizzard) and see it there.

"As with the above point, Mistaken CODs, we realise that mistakes do happen, but were also not able to step in EVERY occasion."
These are no accident they are disguised to look exactly like the AH they are talking about if you have an ACTUAL COD not a SCAMMER COD

JUST LOOK AT WHAT THE PERSON DOING THIS IS SAYING TO HIS VICTIMS

it has now spread to tons of chars, sending the COD's i mean.
Its worked its way to alliance as well, just look at how many of these ive had to deal with
The only reason they are doing it more and more its because NOS dev team is basically saying its cool.
It'd be really cool for the dev to to stick up for its members sometimes you know.

While I wouldn't shed a tear if all of those players lost their accounts, it's a phenomenon that will die off pretty soon as less and less people fall for it.

Just thought I'd leave this here for people who think COD scamming is legal.
