WoW Icon 16x16 Patch 1.6.0 (12-Jul-2005): Spells that drain mana will now properly report the amount of mana gained in the combat log.

It drains the mana but says nothing about restoring it to the caster. That patch fixed the combat log so it would accurately show the amount drained from the target.

Go to 3:07 time stamp and watch from there. If you still think it's a bug in vanilla you're beyond retarded. The only bug may be the tooltip is not correct. It does NOT give mana back to the hunter till wotlk.

The misunderstanding is pretty obvious.
Viper Sting did not give mana to the Hunter before LK.
In 1.X Blizzard changed mana drain effects so that they showed more detail in the combat log.

After LK, someone "linked" this change on wowwiki to Viper Sting. As of today, if you read the wowwiki page of Viper Sting, you just see a patch change that didn't apply to it when it was released, hence the OP's misundersanding.

For other spells that actually drain mana. This change was for them, not for Viper Sting.

As Youfie stated, WoWWiki is the one in the fault here, because someone made a false edit in it.

It's like that time when a prankster edited the Wikipedia article for Jupiter and renamed one of the moons to Canada. Probably some poor shmuck wrote a school paper using Wiki as a source and didn't understand why his teacher laughed at him.
