Did anybody see an in game system announcement or similar before it went down? Nostal authentication servers have been known to fail, (a few weeks ago, anyone?) but they seem to have been pretty good lately. Maintenance is generally announced in game though.

Why never communication ? I think it's normal to tell to you're players when Maintenances are with a good visibility.

We could really use something to tell us if the servers are online/offline intentionally and possibly for how long. Every single time there's a random update or someone can't connect to the server, a bunch of confused people flock to the forums and surprisingly there is usually very little reliable information.

It's hard to say if it is a client or server issue and there is little to do, other than randomly refresh the forums and randomly trying to connect.
